against Los Angeles and the serv-
ing and back-row play of Jennifer
Canner and Weiner's net play led
Detroit past Ottawa.
Against Cleveland Blue,
Weiner and Canner played well
at the net and Surowitz and
Rothenberg did a good job setting
and passing. Also, Megan Heller
served well.
Detroit knocked off Ottawa 15-
8, 15-6 in the first round of the
playoffs. Setters Berlin and
Rothenberg played well and
Lyngaas did a good job in the
back row. Ellman did some ex-
ceptional digging, ran off six
straight service points in the sec-
ond game and had five kills and
three blocks at the net.
San Francisco knocked off
Detroit 15-3, 15-11 despite an-
other Ellman six-point service
run in the second game, but
Detroit rebounded to defeat
Cleveland Blue 15-2, 15-13, 15-
11 for the bronze.
Against San Francisco,
Rothenberg did a fine job setting.
Berlin ran off nine straight ser-
vice points to begin the first game
against Cleveland Blue. Detroit
trailed Cleveland Blue 5-0, 11-6
and 13-8 in the second game be-
fore a seven-point service run by
Lyngaas clinched the victory.
Ellman and Weiner played well
at the net during that match.
GYMNASTICS
Jodie Rosenberg won the gold
medal in the Level 10 all-around
competition with a score of 35.25.
In individual events, she earned
a gold in floor exercise (9.15), a
silver in bars (8.6) and a bronze
in balance beam (8.45). Ann
Walker won a gold in Level 8 bars
(8.3).
MIXED SWIMMING
In the 15-16 age group 200-me-
ter freestyle relay, the team of
Melissa Axner, Kevin Schwartz,•
Stacey Axner and Dave Stegman
won the gold medal (1:38.4).
In the 13-14 200 freestyle re-
lay, the quartet of Jessica Canosa,
Steven Misuraca, Jenny
MacDonald and Jeremy Landa
won the silver (1:46.94). In the
13-14 200 medley relay, the team
of Canosa, Misuraca, Landa and
MacDonald earned the silver
(2:01.15).
MIXED TRACK
In the 13-14 age division 1600-
meter relay, the team of
Alexandra Graham, Leah Weiss,
Scott Adelman and Jon Berman
earned the silver medal. The 13-
14 400 relay quartet of Tracie
Goldman, Jenny Adelson, Jeff
Nolish and Sean Teeple won the
bronze.
RACQUETBALL
In the 15-16 age group, Marc
Selik earned a silver medal. He
lost to George Bogorad of North
Jersey 15-1, 15-8 in the gold-
medal match. Earlier, Bogorad
defeated Selik 15-5, 15-1 and 15-
0, 15-4.
In 13-14, David Kovsky fell to
Randy Shain of Metro West (N.J.)
15-5, 15-3 in the bronze-medal
match. Earlier, Shain defeated
Andrew Field 15-1, 15-3, Elan
Levy of Houston defeated Kovsky
15-1, 15-1, Kovsky defeated Field
11-15, 15-8, 11-7 and Shain de-
feated Kovsky 15-3, 15-2.
TABLE TENNIS
Marla Tapper and Alison
Young won the gold and silver
medals, respectively, in the
girls 15-16 age division singles
competition and Tapper and
Young also won the girls doubles
gold. In mixed doubles, Young
won the gold and Tapper took the
silver.
In girls 13-14, Andi Golding
and Risa Heller won the bronze
in doubles. In round-robin sin-
gles, Golding was 3-4 and Heller
was 0-6 and they didn't qualify
for the medal round. Andy Black
won the boys 13-14 consolation
finals after going 4-2 in round-
robin competition.
WRESTLING
David Parzen won the gold
medal in the 140-pound weight
class and Aaron Kobernick. cap-
tured the bronze in the 110-
pound division. Detroit's team
of Parzen, Kobernick, Matthew
Cohn, Robert Daitch and
Dean Egdish earned a bronze
medal. ❑

he team that ends up on
the wrong side of the score-
board isn't necessarily the
loser. The Detroit girls soft-
ball team proved that at the
Jewish Community Centers
North American Maccabi Youth
Games in Cleveland.
Less than 24 hours after suf-
fering a devastating 14-13 loss to
Seattle and with two of its top
players side-lined by injuries,
Coach Don Rudick's team re-
sponded with its best game of the
tournament.
