"The only times when actors
from one country found them-
selves in another country used to
be when they were on tour," he
said. "Today, actors work in other
countries every single day by way
of electronics."
When his current tour is com-
pleted, Mr. Bikel hopes to take on
projects that involve global elec-
tronics through television and
film work. With the book com-
pleted, he can devote additional
hours to listening to music, par-
ticularly folk music, and reading.
Based in Connecticut with an-
other home in California, he of-
ten visits Israel, where his
96-year-old mother lives. His two
sons—Robert, 25, and Daniel,
23—have chosen professions very
different from their father's; one
is in banking and the other is in
computers.
"I like my life, but like any life,
it has its ups and downs. The
downs are bearable because of
the ups," he said. "The enjoyment
of life is very, very tenuous. We
live in stressful times, and stress
creates more stress.
"But there are points of light,
and the points of light invariably
have to do with the nobility of hu-
man beings. In my world and in
my view, that nobility express-
es itself best in art."
