Despite its 1988 publication
date, the most detailed and re-
spected analysis is Kister's Best
Encyclopedias: a Guide to Gen-
eral and Specialized Encyclope-
dias by Kenneth Kister,
published by Oryx Press and
available in most local libraries.
Read his critique with the ac-
tual encyclopedia he is reviewing
open alongside. This allows you
to weigh Kister's judgments as
you formulate your own. Keep in
mind that publishers constant-
ly improve, update and polish
their offerings, and that Kister's
review is dated.
Though Kister strongly favors
World Book as a best buy, citing
its "preeminently high quality,"
Compton's gets high marks in
science and technology. If science
is your family's area of keenest
interest, Compton's may be your
pick.

Americana's "lackluster" il-
lustrations may be outweighed
in your thinking by the style and
quality of its prose, but that's a
judgment only you can make.
When it comes to mature, vo-
cabulary-rich, scholarly (but not
stuffy), dense, yet highly readable
prose, Encyclopaedia Britannica
shines. The number of articles
and words (44 million!) far sur-
passes the content of any other
publisher. It is considered the
most scholarly offering.
For sheer dazzle — splendid
art, maps, charts, photographs
and the most color, all on quali-
ty paper — World Book is clear-
ly ahead. Ultimately, you must
weigh what matters most, keep-
ing in mind that the set will prob-
ably grace your home longer than
your children will reside there;
your preference matters.
Consider next the format, lay-
out, visual and tactile appeal of
several sets, comparing type size,
amount and quality of graphics
and maps. Keep in mind the span
of years your children will use the
book, not just their current age,
lest you be short-sighted.
However, if you don't person-
ally find the set readable and
appealing, it is unlikely that you
will be tempted to pore over
articles with your children, or
