Look for these signs or symptoms

✓ lack of cooing/babbling as an infant,
few word attempts by 18 months
✓ lack of two-word combinations by at
least 21/2 years
✓ echoing back words without
comprehension
✓ difficulty with social language or
relationships

✓ doesn't pay attention to spoken
language (may appear to have
hearing loss) but highly visually-
oriented (high interest in TV,
videos, letters, numbers)
✓ difficulty with grammatical skills
by age 3
✓ unintelligible speech
