Josh Gad-Hart will miss the World Series, but he'll play
in the North American Maccabi Games.
STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER
osh Gad-Hart won't be able
to play in the Continental
Amateur Baseball Associa-
tion (CABA) World Series
in Broken Arrow, Okla. But he
will compete in the Jewish Corn-
munity Centers North American
Maccabi Youth Games in Cleve-
land.
That's the bottom line for the
13-year-old West Bloomfield res-
ident and eighth-grader at Hillel
Day School.
Josh was a member of the
North Farmington/West Bloom-
field Cobras team which went 16-
0 in the Michigan Baseball
Federation League and won the
CABA state tournament in
Northville on July 24, but was
prevented from going to the
CABA World Series because of a
league administrative mixup.
The World Series was slated
for Aug. 5-16, which would have
prevented Josh from playing with
the Detroit boys softball team in
the Maccabi Games. Now that
the World Series is out of the pic-
ture, Josh will go to Cleveland for
the Aug. 14-19 event.
"The Maccabi Games will be
fun. A lot of my friends will be
competing there, too," Josh said.
"But I am disappointed about not
being able to play in the World
Series. That was one of our
team's main goals all year. We
wanted to see how we could do
against teams from all over the
country."
Josh was one of the Cobras' top
players. He was their left field-
er and cleanup hitter.
"As a parent, my first reaction
j
to what happened with
the World Series was
anger and disappoint-
ment," said David Gad-
Harf, Josh's father. "All
the parents had enjoyed
the team's great success
throughout the summer
and we thought every
victory was going to
bring us one step closer
to the World Series.
"But I guess this
turned out to be a learn-
ing experience for the
kids to teach them that
life isn't always fair."
Cobras manager Bob
Sopo said Gov. John En-
gler is expected to send
a proclamation honoring
the team and plans are
in the works to ask the
cities of Farmington
Hills and West Bloom-
field to post road signs
announcing the Cobras'
Josh Gad Hart
state championship.
Besides their 16 league
victories, the Cobras won
tournament, giving them a final
six consecutive games at the state 22-0 record. ❑

mall in numbers but large
in enthusiasm, delegations
from Ann Arbor and Wind-
sor will be in Cleveland
next week for the Jewish Com-
munity Centers North American
Maccabi Youth Games.
Nineteen athletes — headed
by four-time Maccabi medal-win-
ner Rebecca Wark — will repre-
sent Ann Arbor, and 14 will be
there from Windsor. Sharon
Newman (Ann Arbor) and Ron
S
Polsky (Windsor) are the delega-
tion heads.
Wark, a 15-year-old track
standout who will be a sopho-
more this fall at Ann Arbor
Huron High School, earned a gold
medal in the age 13-14 800-me-
ter run in the 1992 North Amer-
ican Maccabi Games in
Baltimore. She was timed in
2:39.7.
In the regional Maccabi Games
in Pittsburgh last summer, Wark
won golds in the 13-14 400 and
800 and a silver medal as a mem-
ber of Ann Arbor's 13-14 4x400
relay team. She will compete in
the 15-16 age group in Cleveland.
Wark ran cross-country and
track as a high-school freshman.
She was a member of Huron's
4x800 relay team, which quali-
fied for the Class A state track
meet, and she ran a personal-best
2:26 split at the competition in
Midland, topping her old record
