WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE
Jon Kaplan, 45, of Royal Oak, Michigan, perished August 3rd in an auto-
mobile accident. Mr. Kaplan was owner of ZFO Marine Services in the local
area and was one of the founding editors of Great Lakes Cruiser Magazine.
His writings about nautical travel in the region were published monthly and
distributed nation-wide. He was a recognized expert authority in the repair
and operation of recreational vessels in the Great Lakes.
He was also member and frequent award winner with the Northwood
Toastmasters, a licensed Amateur Radio Operator (N8EVI) and worked with
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Kaplan was raised and confirmed through Temple Beth El under the
teaching of Rabbi Sherwin Wine. He and his family later joined the
Birmingham Temple in Farmington Hills, also under the leadership of Rabbi
Wine.
He is survived by his beloved companion, Katherine Champion, and her
son, Steven Pennock. He was the dear son of Joyce Kaplan and the late
Theodore Kaplan, brother of James (Patricia), Michael and Elizabeth
Kaplan. He also leaves behind two nieces, Rebecca and Amy.
The "Kaplan Fund" has been established in his memory by his friends at
Great lakes Cruiser Magazine. Each year the fund will benefit a worthy
group or organization that has advanced the ideals of recreational boating
in the waters of the Great Lakes. For more information, contact the publish-
ers at (810) 545-5999.
