night to capture the title in the
double-elimination post-season
tournament, Birmingham came
through with an exciting 1-0 vic-
tory in nine innings and a 7-3 tri-
umph in the regulation seven
innings.
Norwood had handed Birm-
ingham its first playoff loss two
nights earlier, so the double tri-
umphs were particularly sweet.
"We were in the losers' brack-
et in the finals the last two years,
too," Herkowitz pointed out. "Two
years ago, we beat Bloomfield
Hills, then lost to them in the bot-
tom of the seventh inning in the
second game. I ast summer, Troy
beat us in the first game."
This year's Birmingham team,

made up of players from Birm-
ingham Groves and Birmingham
Seaholm high schools, also cap-
tured the regular-season crown
in the 10-team league for players
ages 18 and under. Birmingham
finished 14-4, one-half game bet-
ter than Norwood.
In addition to being successful
on the diamond, Herkowitz says

his squad enjoyed the season.
"At this level of baseball, the
kids are interested in the game,
but they also need to have a good
time playing or they won't both-
er with it," Herkowitz said. "My
No. 1 goal was to make sure
everyone got enough playing
time. That was important."
Herkowitz's 15-player roster,
which averaged "in the low 17s"
age-wise, included his son Dave
Herkowitz and Sandy Levine
from Groves and Justin Ishpia
from Seaholm.
Dave Herkowitz, who will be
a sophomore this fall, played sec-
ond base for Birmingham.
Levine, a pitcher-first baseman-
outfielder who will be a senior,
was a pleasant surprise at the
plate.
Ishpia, a junior-to-be, started
about half of Birmingham's
games at second base, where he
provided solid defense.
