Adult Study Sessions
Will Precede Holidays

Adults wishing to prepare for the
upcoming Jewish High Holidays
are invited to participate in four
weeks of free adult study sessions
beginning Aug. 8 at the Midrasha
Center for Adult Jewish Learn-
ing, 21550 West 12 Mile Road in
Southfield.
Each session will feature a dif-
ferent teacher, and all will ex-
plore themes relating to the Days
of Awe (the 10-day period begin-
ning with Rosh Hashanah and
running through Yom Kippur).
Reservations are suggested to en-
sure adequate seating and copies
of hand-out materials. Most of the
events are on a basic introducto-
ry level. All sessions will take
place at 8 p.m. on the dates list-
ed below.
The opening program on Aug.
8 will feature Dr. Mark Smiley,
headmaster of Hillel Day School,
and will focus on "Repentance in
the First Person Plural: The Al
Cheit Confession and the Idea of
Community Teshuvah." On Aug.
9, Hillel teacher and adult edu-
cator Shula Fleischer will lead
a study session on "Gender Im-
agery in High Holiday Liturgy."

On Aug. 10, Cantor Gail P.
Hirschenfang of Temple Beth El
will present "Musical Highlights
of the Days of Awe."
On Aug. 11, Rabbi Rick Stein-
berg, summer student rabbi at
Temple Kol Ami, will discuss
"The Elul Experience: Attaining
Spiritual Fitness."
On Aug. 15, Aviva Silverman
will offer an overview of Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur us-
ing materials from the curricu-
lum of the Florence Melton Adult F/
Mini-School. This session is open -`
to everyone, but is especially de-
signed for those who are con-
templating enrolling in the
Mini-School, which will open in
October. Ms. Silverman is a com-
munity adult educator and a
teacher at Hillel Day School. On
Aug. 16, Stacie Fine, education-
al director at Birmingham Tem-
ple and rabbi-in-training at the
International Institute for Secu-
lar and Humanistic Judaism, will
discuss "What Do The High hol-
idays Mean to Secular Human-
istic Jews?"
On Aug. 17, Rabbi Daniel
Nevins, of Adat Shalom Syna-
