LADIES' EUROPEAN READY-TO-WEAR

When Rabbi Elimelich Silber-
berg came to West Bloomfield
from Crown Heights to start a
synagogue 19 years ago, he re-
members a Japanese child from
a neighboring apartment being
one of the few interested in com-
ing over to sing "Shalom Ale-
ichem" before Shabbat dinner.
Since then, the Bais Chabad
has spent six years holding ser-
vices and classes at Ealy Ele-
mentary School before, in 1982,
moving into its 10,000-square-
foot synagogue on Maple Road.
The synagogue, which original-
ly housed a membership of 35
families, has now grown to more
than 100 families and is seeking
expansion.
That is why it will go before
the West Bloomfield Planning
Commission on Tuesday night

The building will
double in size.

to request doubling the size of its
facility.
The renovated synagogue will
be called the Sarah Tugman
Bais Chabad Torah Center.
Classrooms, sanctuary, library
space and other parts of the ex-
isting building will be expand-
ed.
"We're doubling the down-
stairs and the upstairs," Rabbi
Silberberg said. "We needed
room to expand our high school
and our synagogue is expanding.
I think it shows that we're very
positive about the growth of the
Jewish community in West
Bloomfield."
The 10,000-square-foot addi-
tion will cost about $400,000 and
is being supervised by general
contractor Alex Skoczylas. The
Torah Center is being named in
the memory of Sara Tugman,
the mother of contributor Mar-
tin Goodman. This is at least the
second Detroit landmark named
in honor of Sara, the first being
Sara's Deli on Greenfield Road.
