s the Agency for Jewish
Education strives to move
forward with new learning
approaches, staff members
want to make sure no one is left
behind.
Responding to the Jewish Fed-
eration's funding priorities, which
listed special needs as fourth, the
AJE and a task force of parents
and educators compiled a pro-
posal for funding to better serve
the needs of emotionally, physi-
cally and mentally challenged
students.
Through its Sunday morning
class, the AJE serves about 25
autistic and developmentally de-
layed students. Day schools
struggle independently with the
issues of meeting special needs.
Options and dollars are limited.
special-needs students, and lead-
ership training.
Federation leadership says the
$3,400 is only a beginning.
Discussing education alloca-
tions earlier this month, Allan
Nachman, chairman of Federa-
tion's implementation committee
of the Giles Report on education,
said "I hardly think this is the ex-
tent of special needs funding. It's
a place to start from."
The task force will forge ahead
with program development, but
Ms. Locke is concerned because
"we'll be training teachers and
they'll have nowhere to go with
their knowledge."
An estimated 6,000 school-age
Jewish children live in the met-
ropolitan Detroit area. About 12
percent of the general population

"Funding would open doors to is believed to have special needs,
children locked out of Jewish ed- ranging from learning and lan-
