Double-Digit Inflation Seen

Inflation in Israel will reach be-
tween 10 and 11 percent this
year, according to updated Trea-
sury estimates presented to the
cabinet this week during its first
session on the 1995 budget.
The Treasury warned that the
recent hike in interest rates
threatens to undermine the coun-
try's competitiveness, which was
strengthened the past few years
by a coordinated foreign exchange
and interest-rate policy and a
more flexible labor market.
In addition, the Treasury is
predicting a slowdown in eco-
nomic growth in the coining three

years. The GDP — which mea-
sures goods produced and ser-
vices provided by the economy —
will grow only 5.2 percent next
year compared with 6.2 percent
this year, and will average 5 per-
cent a year through 1997.
The drop is attributed to the
fact that with less immigration,
the country is reaching fast "full
employment," which leads to
higher labor costs and lower busi-
ness profitability.
The cabinet will hold five
sessions on the budget before
forwarding it to the Knesset on
Sept. 1.
