Revenues Are
On The Rise

Revenues last month totaled MS
5.8 billion, a 13-percent rise from
June 1993, as economic activity
stabilized at the high levels
reached at the beginning of the
year, Israel Revenues Director
Yoram Gabbai reported.
During the first half of the
year, Mr. Gabbai said, revenues
expanded 14 percent to NIS 35.7
billion.

Stock Market
Fall Deceiving

Despite the stock market's sus-
tained fall, Israel Finance Min-
ister Avraham Shohat reassured
the Knesset finance committee
that the economy is sound.
"From the perspective of real
economic activity, there is defi-
nite reason for optimism," he
said.
Mr. Shohat pointed to eco-
nomic indicators for 1993 and the
first five months of this year
which show a flourishing econo-
my with growing investments,
expanding exports and lower un-
employment.
He said the stock market's be-
havior not only fails to reflect ac-
tual economic conditions, but is
acting exactly counter to the pos-
itive economic trends.
Mr. Shohat said he under-
stands the concern surrounding
the stock market's performance
and hopes it will ultimately re-
flect the economy's positive real
activity.
MK Ariel Weinstein (Likud)
said if the stock exchange's fall
does not reflect economic reali-
ties, then it must reflect the pub-
lic's lack of confidence in its
economic leadership. He called
on the government to resign to
make room for one in whom the
public would have more faith.
MK Avi Yehezkel (Labor)
called on the government to es-
tablish an "economic Cabinet"
which would be in charge of set-
ting a unified economic policy.
President Ezer Weizman also
entered the fray, calling on the
country's top economic policy
makers to stop bickering because
the fighting is undermining con-
fidence in the economy and the
stock market.
