second prize in an international
economics essay contest, enti-
tling him to an award of $1,500
and a $1,000 travel grant to at-
tend a conference in France. Mr.
Horwitz is a St. Lawrence Uni-
versity Assistant Professor and
Dana Fellow of Economics.
MICHAEL IL BKHRMANN of
Huntington Woods recently ac-
cepted the position of school prin-
cipal at Leonard Elementary
School in the Oxford school dis-
trict. Mr. Behrmarm completes
his teaching career as a sixth
grade teacher from Oakley Park
Elementary School in Walled
Lake after having received a
Teacher of the Year award from
his peers, students and their
parents.

GERI LEVIT, a member of the
teaching staff of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, has been honored
as first recipient of the newly
endowed Bernard and Judith
Cantor Distinguished Educator's
Award, which recognizes teach-
ing excellence and includes a
stipend to attend the Coalition
for the Advancement of Jewish
Education. Mrs. Levit also serves
as producer and host of the
Shaarey Zedek cable television
show.

recently returned from the Amer-
ican Conference of Cantors An-
nual Convention in Baltimore
where he was invited to partici-
pate in a concert performed at the
Holocaust Memorial Museum in
Washington, D.C.
Isaac Hays (1796-1879), one
of America's early medical
pioneers in the field of oph-
thalmology, was also one of
the foremost medical writers
of his time and a co-founder
of the American Medical
Association. He was the
editor of the American Jour-
nal of the Medical Sciences
and published new versions
of numerous scholarly books,
