Lovely Lucerne
And Jewish Life

RUTH ROVNER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

As the boat glided along Lake

Lucerne, the scene was picture-
postcard beautiful. Clouds bil-
lowed in a blue sky, chalets
dotted the hillsides, sailboats
bobbed on the water and the peak
of Mount Pilatus loomed dra-
matically in the distance.
"Magnifique!" exclaimed the
French tourists. 'Wish we weren't
leaving tomorrow," the American
couple said wistfully.

As we climbed steadily and
slowly, we watched the lake re-
cede and the trees grow denser.
We were cozily enclosed as we en-
joyed a 10-minute ride in the sky
to reach Rigi Kulmsbad.
The train station was just a
few minutes from the cable car,
and soon a bright red train ap-
proached. It was one of the inge-
nious Swiss cogwheel trains that
sturdily travel the mountain
routes.
This one took us on a one hour
ascent. Passengers' eyes were
glued to the windows all the way.
Alongside the train route were
dense trees and wooded paths.We
saw people strolling, some with
walking sticks. Far below, we had
