T

he four Young Israel synagogues which make up
the Young Israel Council of Metropolitan Detroit
will hold their fourth annual joint dinner June 20
at the Marriott Troy Hotel. Funds raised as a result of the dinner will be used by the individual branches to
support youth activities and other ongoing programs as well as assist in the maintenance or other synagogue
related activities.
Young Israel of Greenfield will honor Mr. and Mrs. Morris Flatt; the honoree from West Bloomfield will be
Rabbi Alon Tolwin; Young Israel of Southfield will honor Mr. Abraham Selesny; and the honoree from Young
Israel of Oak-Woods will be Mrs. Flora S. Hoffman.
The Flatts have been active members of Young Israel of Greenfield from more than 30 years. They have
continued support for the shul as well as the rest of the community.
Rabbi Tolwin began his association with Young Israel of West Bloomfield in February of this year when
he was hired as the shun very first rabbi. Rabbi Tolwin studied in Israel for many years and then, in 1981, came
to Detroit where he has been very involved with Aish HaTorah.
Abe Selesny has been a part of the Young Israel community his entire life. He was instrumental in the cre-
ation of Young Israel of Southfield and served with consecutive terms as president of the shul. For his efforts
on behalf of Young Israel, Abe was a recipient of the National Council's Shofar Award in 1983.
Flora S. Hoffman has been an active and generous member of Young Israel of Oak-Woods since 1989. She
is a life member of Hadassah and ofJNF Women. Ms. Hoffman also is a strong supporter of Torah education
and Israel.

Elected To Board

H

enry S. Dorfman was elected president of the Holocaust Memorial
Center at a board of directors meeting to elect executive commit-
tee members and officers. The executive committee elected Saul
Waldman to be chairman of the committee. Leon Halpern stepped down
from the position after 10 years of service.
Other executive committee members who were elected are vice presi-
dents, Joel Dorfman, Dr. Steven D. Grant, Lawrence S. Jackier, Alexan-
der Karp, and Abraham Weberman; treasurer, Gustav Berenholz; and
members, Dr. Joseph Berenholz, Alexander Ehrmann, Dr. Irving Gast-
man, Leon Haplern, Dr. Kristina Kochanowski, Abraham Pasternak,
Sonia Popowski-Ra.dner, and Martin Water.

A carnival to benefit the Chil-
dren's Leukemia Foundation
will take place from noon to 4
