TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING
While this column mainly concerns it-
self with hearing loss, it should also be point-
ed out that some people suffer from an
extreme sensitivity to ordinary sound. This
rare condition, known as hyperacusis, can
make the mere sound of running water in-
tolerably loud to those so affected. This dis-
order has no definite cause, although some
suspect that it results from damage to the
auditory nerves. Exposure to loud noise and
head trauma are also closely associated
with it. Hyperacusis can affect a person of
any age and is nearly always accompanied
by ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or other nois-
es. Although no treatment offers a definitive
cure, some sufferers find relief with the use
of masking devices which cover up certain
noise by emitting sounds of their own.
If you suffer from hyperacusis, you will
want to discuss strategies for improving
the quality of life with your physician or
hearing aid specialist. LUCAS-CRUZ HEAR-
ING AID SERVICE, located at 18899 W. 12
Mile Rd. in Lathrup Village (424-8450),
is here to help. We have devoted our pro-
fessional careers to helping the hearing
impaired experience more of the wonder-
ful sounds this world has to offer. Hearing
loss affects one out of every ten persons
in all societies. If you suspect that you may
be among them, you owe it to yourself to
come in for a quick, painless hearing test.
We offer a 30-day trial on all aids.
P.S. Most hyperacusis patients wear
ear plugs, available from the hearing
specialist.
