Raymond House
The 1871 Raymond House in Port
Sanilac is another Victorian charmer
that landed on a book cover. The inn
was selected as the 1994 cover illus-
tration of "Bed and Breakfast USA,"
one of the premier guidebooks. Lo-
cated 500 feet from Lake Huron on
M-25, the red brick Victorian is eas-
ily recognized by its steeply pitched
roof and white icicle trim. The Ray-
mond House is one of the many inns
located in Michigan's thumb area,
which offers small town ambience
and water recreation.
The house, built by a pioneer set-
tler and merchant, was occupied con-
tinuously by the Raymond Family for
112 years. With visions of the house
making a perfect B&B, Shirley Deni-
son bought it in 1983 and began its
restoration. She also brought the
house up to modern-day standards
by installing air conditioning and con-
verting the sizable closets to bath-
rooms in the seven large bedrooms.
Denison has furnished the house
with period pieces accented by
framed ancestral pictures, hand-cro-
. cheted rugs, brightly color bed-
spreads and lace curtains. An antique
collector and dealer, Denison also
maintains a shop at the house. Cur-
rently under construction is a two-
story carriage house adjoining the
inn on the site of the original horse
barn.
"After 10 years as a B&B innkeep-
. er , I am just as enthusiastic as I was
the first day," says Denison, who is
now assisted by her son Gene. She
enjoys serving guests a home-cooked
buffet breakfast and directing them
to the area's beaches and points of
interest
The village has a 200-boat mari-
na, boat launch, swimming beach,
and a dive shop and charter boat for
scuba excursions to view sunken ves-
sels and artifacts at the Michigan Un-
derwater Preserve. Other points of
interest include an 1886 lighthouse,
a county historical museum and barn
theater with seasonal productions.
Briley Inn
Most summer guests at the Bri-
ley Inn have come to northeast
Michigan for the golf courses or trout
streams. The redwood inn on the
Thunder Bay River is found off High-
way M-32 on the west edge of Atlanta
between Gaylord and Alpena. Elk
Ridge Golf Course is just five min-
utes away and Garland, Thunder
