sine triphosphate (GTP) — a
molecule similar to ATP but with
a different chemical base — as
well as amiloride, another mol-
ecule, could block the opening of
the ion channels, thereby im-
peding the fertilization process.
In order to test these finding,
the researchers traced the in vit-
ro fertilization process of the frog
eggs. The process was examined
in three different groups: one
group was exposed to the block-
ing material GTP, one to the
blocker amiloride, and the third,
a control group, was not exposed
to any blocking materials.
In the first two groups, there
was up to a 70 percent inhibito-
ry effect, thereby demonstrating
that, when unhindered by other,
counteracting substances, it is
the ATP brought naturally to the
egg by the sperm which sets off
the ion charge, thus initiating
the fertilization process.
This discovery of the connec-
tion between ATP and the onset
or prevention of fertilization
opens a new avenue for dealing
with problems of conception as
well as for exploration of new ap-
proaches to contraception. O

edly large increase in the cost-of-
living index for April has left
Israeli ministers scrambling this
week to find ways to clamp down
on spiraling costs in a sector
largely responsible for the in-
crease — housing.
The 2 percent rise in April's
cost-of-living index, announced
by the Central Bureau of Statis-
tics, was described by Jacob
Frenkel, governor of the Bank of
Israel, as "extremely worrisome."
The announcement spurred
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to
summon his housing and finance
ministers and their senior aides
to an emergency meeting Tues-
day to examine the situation, par-
ticularly the effect of housing
costs on annual inflation.
Soaring increases in home-pur-
chase costs and in monthly
rentals, which accounted for a full
40 percent of the April rise, have
set red lights flashing in econo-
mists' offices here.
The emergency meeting last-
ed four hours, with participants
presenting their views of the sit-
uation and proposing suggestions
for speeding up home construc-
tion and holding down building
costs.
In view of the wide range of
suggestions put forward, Mr. Ra-
bin instructed Housing Minister
Binyamin Ben-Eliezer to put to-
gether an interministerial team
to prepare an agenda.
