Eye Clinic Opened
In Zimbabwe
Maneva Kiyki, 80, has been suf-
fering from poor vision for 22
years. Unable to work and live
on her own, she resides with her
daughter and her nine grand-
children in Zimbabwe. When she
was recently treated at the JDC
Eye Treatment Clinic at Bindura
Provincial Hospital, her vision
was sufficiently restored and she
now enjoys her remaining years
among family members.
The clinic will
benefit 1 million
people.
The eye clinic was established
by the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee Inter-
national Development Program,
in conjunction with the Ministry
of Health and Child Welfare. The
clinic will benefit a population of
approximately 1 million people
in the remote Mashonaland Cen-
tral Province who previously
lacked access to professional eye
care.
Dr. Yair Porges, a staff of three
nurses and an aide treat more
than 100 patients a week, from
infants to the elderly. These pa-
tients are also treated by the staff
in a mobile eye unit equipped
with refraction, examination and
surgical equipment. ❑

plaining the factors that trigger

fertilization when a sperm first
meets an egg.
Scientists for many years have
sought to find particular proteins
activated by the sperm that
might serve as the trigger setting
off the beginning of fertilization
when sperm meets egg. What
was known is that when the
sperm-egg bonding takes place,
a phenomenon known as depo-
larization occurs in the egg. This
involves a change in the electri-
cal potential of the membrane on
the egg surface and a subsequent
electrical charge created by the
release of sodium ions.
Researchers found a receptor
on the surface of frog eggs that
reacts to adenosine triphosphate
(ATP), the energy-containing
molecule found within all living
things, though normally within
