school students in Jerusalem who
reinforced the theme of the mis-
sion: You're not taking your life
in your hands by visiting Israel.
"One kid said to me, We hear
it's not so safe in Detroit,' " Jim
Safran said.
The brothers' whirlwind mis-
sion coincided with a personal
mission. Said Jim: "The day we
were in Israel was the last day
we'd be saying Kaddish for my
mother, Leah, who passed away

national defense is stronger than

The Safran brothers agreed to
represent Detroit's community at
the behest of the Jewish Federa-
tion of Metropolitan Detroit.
Though their trip was brief, it in-
cluded speeches by Yisrael Lau,
the chief rabbi of Israel; Edward
Djerejian, the U.S. ambassador
to Israel; Ezer Weizman, presi-
dent of Israel; and Shevah Weiss,
speaker of the Knesset.
They also spoke with high

well-known Detroit politi-
cal figure last week
stressed the importance of
working hand-in-hand
with the suburbs for eveyone's
benefit.
Detroit City Council President
Maryann Mahaffey, who has
been invited to speak to the Jew-
ish community on numerous oc-
casions during her 20 years in
office, delivered the keynote ad-
dress during the Jewish Com-
munity Council's annual meeting
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
"I'm pleased to have this op-
portunity to share my thoughts
with you," Ms. Mahaffey said. "I
feel I am among friends because
I recognize so many people here
through community and profes-
sional activities. I even see one of
my former students."
Ms. Mahaffey, who has served
as city council president since
1990, talked about transitions in
the city, suburbs and the rest of
the world. She also stressed the
need for Detroit and the suburbs
to work together to strengthen
the region.
"I realize that many of you
grew up in Detroit," she said. "I

know some of you go back be-
cause you've told me so. And
you've told me your reactions,
both the positive and the nega-
tive. If we work as a region, we
will do much better in Lansing
and in Washington."
Ms. Mahaffey stressed the
need for public transportation

the risk to be
leaders."

linking the city and suburbs and
the need to recognize housing
problems here and across the
country.
"I meet with some people at the
Jewish Federation Apartments.
I speak there every
so often, and they
talk about wanting
to take a bus to
Detroit. We need
buses to go both
ways, from one end
to another."
She also discussed
breaking down the
Eight Mile Road bar- .
rier that serves as a
symbolic divider be-
tween Detroit and
the suburbs.
"May we continue
to work together and
may we be willing to
take the risk to be
leaders," she said. "It
might not be popu-
lar, but if we keep at
it long enough it be-
comes widely accept-
ed."
