to Israel; Ezer Weizman, presi-
dent of Israel; and Shevah Weiss,

with the suburbs for eveyone's
benefit.
Detroit City Council President
Maryann Mahaffey, who has
been invited to speak to the Jew-
ish community on numerous oc-
casions during her 20 years in
office, delivered the keynote ad-
dress during the Jewish Com-
munity Council's annual meeting
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
"I'm pleased to have this op-
portunity to share my thoughts
with you," Ms. Mahaffey said. "I
feel I am among friends because
I recognize so many people here
through community and profes-
sional activities. I even see one of
my former students."
Ms. Mahaffey, who has served
as city council president since
1990, talked about transitions in
the city, suburbs and the rest of
the world. She also stressed the
need for Detroit and the suburbs
to work together to strengthen
the region.
"I realize that many of you
grew up in Detroit," she said. "I

know some of you go back be-
cause you've told me so. And
you've told me your reactions,
both the positive and the nega-
tive. If we work as a region, we
will do much better in Lansing
and in Washington."
