grandchildren; two great-grand-

MARY NEWMAN, of New York,
formerly of Detroit, died May 14.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Ann and Mar-
vin of New Jersey; daughter and
son-in-law, Bernice and Elliott
Tropp of New Jersey; sister and
brother-in-law, Samuel and
Sophie Pryor of Farmington Hills;
sister, Ida Greenstein of Hous-
ton; six grandchildren; five great-
grandchildren. Burial in New
Jersey.

NER, 93, of West Bloomfield,
died May 23. She leaves her sis-

Harold Herbst
Dr. Harold B. Herbst, 82, of West
Bloomfield, died May 14. Dr.
Herbst was one of the first
liberators to enter Buchenwald
Concentration Camp; he has a
videotaped segment regarding
the liberation which is in the
archives at the U.S. Holocaust
Museum and is being used in one
of their programs. Dr. Herbst was
a Fellow in the American Geri-
atric Association, American
Society of Abdominal Surgery,
American Occupational Medical
Association. He was on staff at
Brent Hospital.
He leaves his daughter and
son-in-law, Caryl and the Hon-
orable William Gitlow of Hunt-
ington Woods; son, Dr. Ronald P.
and Marcia Herbst of Rochester;
brother, Fred Herbst of West
Bloomfield; sister and brother-in-
law, Rita and Howard Levitt of
Oak Park; seven grandchildren;
one great-grandchild.
GILDA PASSERMAN, 82, of
Oak Park, died May 16. She
leaves her husband, Allen; son
and daughter-in-law, Michael
and Mary of Trenton; daughter,
Lori of Oak Park; sister, Sybil
Marvis of Las Vegas, Nev.; two
grandchildren; one great-grand-
son.

16. She is survived by her

past Michigan Woman of the
Year, past president of the
League of Jewish Women's Or-
ganization, past chairman of the
Jewish Book Fair, past board
member of the sisterhood of Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek. She
was a former writer for the Jew-
ish Chronicle, past president of
Central States Region of Hadas-
sah and past president and
founder of the Detroit Chapter of
the National Home for the Jew-
ish Children in Detroit.
In addition, Mrs. Schiller was
named Volunteer of the Year by
the city of Detroit and awarded
