Cartoons by Herblock

H

erbert Block was a young
boy in Chicago when he
made his first caricature:
a picture of Kaiser Wil-
helm of Germany complete with
"W.-shaped mustache, squinty
eyes and spiked helmet."
Today, Herbert Block
(Herblock) is a Pulitzer Prize-
winning editorial cartoonist for
the Washington Post. His life
and work are chronicled in
Herblock: A Cartoonist's
Life (Macmillan Publishing).
In his autobiography, Mr.
Block tells of his childhood in
Chicago, his first job as editor-
ial page cartoonist with the
Chicago Daily News, his
wartime years in the Army and
his career following his move in
1946 to Washington, D.C.
Among the many politicians
and actors, authors and poets
Mr. Block met in his long career
were Truman Capote, Harry
Truman, Marlene Dietrich and
Carl Sandberg. He also writes
inA Cartoonist's Life of the Mc-
Carthy era and the fall of Pres-
ident Richard Nixon.
