There is no correlation between
the recent decline in the Israel
stock market and the rise in
real estate prices, Bank Leumi
chairman Moshe Sanbar said.
He said the economy is in
good shape despite the sharp
fall in prices on the stock ex-
change during the first quarter
this year.
He predicted that Gross Do-
mestic Product would rise be-
tween 3-4 percent this year and
Gross National Product also
would register a sharp rise.
Last year, "there were many
investments in the economy," Mr.

Sanbar said. "Asa result, GNP is
expected to rise nicely in 1994,
which will eventually restore the
capital market's balance."
The rise in real estate prices
is understandable, Mr. Sanbar
said, because investment in
housing fell 27 percent last year
and building starts by the pub-
lic sector fell from 21,000 in
1992 to 4,800.
Mr. Sanbar said high demand
for private real estate also implies
high demand for commercial real
estate. He expressed optimism
that demand for office buildings
will pick up.
