A SMOKE-FILLED WOMB
When weighing their decision to quit
smoking, parents should take into account
the effect that smoke has upon their children's
health. The latest piece of evidence of smok-
ing's detrimental effect upon health comes
from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
Researchers there found that children whose
mothers smoked during pregnancy could not
hear as well as children of non-smoking moth-
ers. While babies born to smoke-free moth-
ers were startled by the sound of a bell, babies
exposed to smoke in utero were less re-
sponsive. What is more, their reduced hear-
ing response persisted through their
pre-adolescent years. It is thought that the
trouble centered on the smoke's affect on the
tiny hairs of the inner ear which convert sound
into nerve impulses.

Do yourself and your children a favor
and quit smoking today. It is perhaps the
best step that you can take towards better
health — both for yourself and for your
loved ones. Here at LUCAS-CRUZ HEAR-
ING AID SERVICE we have on staff knowl-
edgeable hearing instruments consultants
who are state licensed and have been work-
ing with hearing aids for the past two
decades. We have generated an excellent
reputation with our clients, audiologists,
