he says. "I learned a lot med-
ically speaking, but I also
learned how to develop an atti-
tude of professional caring."
Ms. Davitz notes that the
popular departments with the
foreign students are cardiology,
pediatrics, gastroenterology and
the emergency ward. Although
a knowledge of Hebrew is de-
sirable, it is not essential be-
cause so many staff members
know English.
According to Miriam Shein,
program coordinator at
Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospi-
tal, the American students find
the atmosphere in Israel more
relaxed.
"They are used to more for-
mal dress among the doctors
and a greater distance between
senior and junior staff," she
says.
Dr. Jacobsohn recently sur-
veyed all the students who have
done their electives at Shaare
Zedek over the years. Many are
now physicians in hospitals
throughout the world. A small
percentage are now working in
Israel.
Mr. Sheiner feels the pro-
gram provided a very solid med-
ical experience and helped
create a strong tie with Israel.
"I feel much closer to the
country now and I understand
the importance of living here,"
he says. "It'll be really hard go-
ing home. It's going to take
weeks to disengage. This has
been a very positive experi-
ence." ❑

Washington — The
British
journal of Nutrition has described
three comprehensive studies
reporting documented losses of as
much as 31 pounds over eight
weeks. The average weight loss was
15 pounds per study candidate.
One study used patients ages 30
to 57 years old, who weighed 160 to
240 pounds and were referred to an
obesity out-patient clinic. Patients
were specifically asked NOT to alter
their eating habits in any way dur-
ing the 8-week study. Most report-
ed substantially lowered hunger
rates, resulting in the significant
weight loss described above.
The study cites a second finding
noteworthy to diet and health con-
scious Americans: "Total serum cho-
lesterol levels were significantly reduced
following use ... but levels of HDL choles-
terol (the good cholesterol) was
unchanged."
This proven appetite blocker is
