JEWISH FLAVOR page 69

of the Year by the Michigan
Dance Association.
"I had divided a large group
into smaller groups, and we
were working on an underwater
theme. I gave the children some
ideas, and I noticed that there
was a teacher standing over to
the side, and she had tears in
her eyes. I wondered what I did
wrong.
"A boy was in the center of
the group giving directions, and
the teacher said that he usually
doesn't speak at all. Dance had
given him a real medium for ex-
pression. It touched him so, he
came out of himself."
Ms. Kramer, who arranged
dance programs that marked
the closing of the former build-
ing that housed Temple Israel
and the opening of the current
facility in West Bloomfield, finds
that her audiences are similarly
moved through the pieces with
Jewish themes such as "Trav-
elers on the Same Road," which
comes from the Kaddish prayer.
Another Jewish piece, "Sing-
er of Stories," is based on the
works of writer Isaac Bashevis
Singer.
"I'm hoping that what we do
and particularly the works we
do in the schools help young-
sters and their teachers and
their parents once again take
their rightful places in the com-
munity as participants and sup-
porters of the arts," Ms. Kramer
said.
The Detroit Dance Collective
will perform at 8 p.m. March 18,
at Macomb Center for the Per-
forming Arts. For information,
