I

here are many stories
that could be told in 25
years ... especially at a
men's barber shop where
secrets are unfolded while the
hair stylists clip away, a man-
icurist tenderly holds hands, or
perhaps when under a dryer
(yes, men do that, too).
But a lot of them are of the
privacy variety and remain
closemouthed coverts of the
gent and his stylist or mani-
curist.
Charterhouse Barber Shop
on the Boardwalk at Orchard
Lake Road, south of Maple, a
couple of doors from Stage &
Co., is actually celebrating two
anniversaries ... 25 years all
told and seven at the present
site ... with a five-year in-be-
tween span at Franklin Shop-
ping Plaza on Northwestern
Highway.
Of today's owners at Char-
terhouse Barber Shop ... Al
Nettle, Ron Eddy and Howard
LaLone ... only Al was an own-
er 25 years ago with Roy Cal-
ley ... Ron and Howard were
valued employees back then
on Nine Mile Road when Jack
Freedman put his hairpiece
on backwards and Al worked
on it 10 minutes trying to
make the toupee look good be-
fore Jack finally removed the
cigar from his mouth and said,
"Al, I think it's on backwards."
It was on Nine Mile Road
when a female stripper streak-
er was "with it" in the some-
what "vogue" of the era and
came running, or sauntering,
as Al says, through the shop ...
It was funny watching every-
one's faces and Herb Kaufman
remarking that he'd seen bet-
ter bodies by Fisher ... One fel-
low getting a hot towel missed
the whole thing, but didn't feel
bad after hearing Herb's com-
ment.
Iry Kramer had Howard to
thank for putting out the fire on
his head that happened when
Roy used a lighted taper with-
out knowing that the alcohol in
his hair spray hadn't evaporat-
ed yet (one in a million) ... With-
out the quick action of Howard,
who knows what Iry would
have looked like?
The hairpiece owned by Mac
Mindlin took a trip to the
Caribbean Islands ... while he
stayed at home ... Ron had put
Mac's toupee on the wrong per-
son's head!
That hairpiece swishing
around in the barber shop's
washing machine was, of

course, there by mistake ... But
a good thing that the gent, who
would rather his name isn't
used, had more than one ... Bet-
ter still that he wasn't wearing
it at the time!
Joe Perlman's wife didn't like
the look when a tint was used
to give his white hair a little
blue coloring ... The color had
come out purple ... Efforts were
made to strip out that tint but
the result was even more dis-
astrous ... with Joe's head look-
ing like a peacock.
Bob Schwartz and Jim
Prenslauer were both freshly

charge to supervise the doing of
their hair.
The stories could go on and
on ... As Jimmy Durante used
to say, "I got a million of 'em!"
Charterhouse Barber Shop
is to many like a home away
from home for its customers ...
There's always a lot of friendly
hellos and smiles ... plenty of
coffee and cake ... an all-around
atmosphere that seems to yell
"Welcome!" after entering the
doors and into a veritable sea of
fully-mirrored walls.
On the Boardwalk this was
the former Jonathon's Salon of
yesteryears, which Al, Ron and

Al Nettle,
Ron Eddy and Howard LaLone
of Charterhouse Barber Shop.

coifed when for some reason
they wound up with shampoo
hoses in their hands and began
soaking each other ... A lot of
fun except that the Charter-
house guys had to re-style both
of them all over again.
Rabbi M. Robert Syme spent
enough time at the Nine Mile
Charterhouse Barber Shop to
get an "Honorary. Barber's Li-
cense" to go along with his
many other diplomas and cre-
dentials of honor ... Someone
took his coat by mistake ... car
keys and all.
It was also on Nine Mile that
Barron Herman tipped his hair-
piece to a woman on the side-
walk in front of the shop ... She
almost jumped out of her shoes!
Sid Schwartz was the only
customer who directed his own
hairstyling ... Twice a week,
with a mirror on his head, Sid
would show Al exactly how to
do his hair, strand by strand ...
and before recently moving to
Palm Springs, never did live
down the kidding from fellow
members at Franklin Hills
Country Club who jokingly
would ask what he would

Howard took over and have
made into one of the better-look-
ing and highly-respected hair
styling shops in the Northwest.
Charterhouse Barber Shop
opened its doors at Charter-
house Apartments on Nine Mile
on March 1, 1969... And on the
Boardwalk, March 1, 1987.
The three present owners are
also adept at other things be-
sides hair styling.
Al does carpentry work as a
hobby and customizes golf clubs
at home to suit individual needs
... Like the driver for Burt
Loewenstein, a putter for Dr.
Ken Trader, among many ...
He is also an avid golfer him-
self.
Ron, wife Gail and their son,
Tom, have a landscaping com-
pany ... and Ron loves to do
landscape designing.
Howard is single and would
make some gal happy with his
strong affection for cooking ...
especially making pies and
breads ... He also is an avid
hunter and fisherman.
Two employees are still with
Charterhouse Barber Shop
from the Nine Mile Road days
