y mother, a sharp,
spunky 85 year old,
has always had a
ready quote for every
occasion. "The way to a man's
heart is through his stomach..."
still rings in my ears. Although
nowadays it's likely the man is
the cook, that familiar phrase
always springs to mind when
it's "dinner for two." (Maybe
that's why my chosen major
was "Home Ec.")
Not an accomplished cook?
Never fear. Take-outs, gourmet
shops and manufacturers offer
a wider selection of ready-to-
cook foods and flavorings than
ever before. On a
recent foray, I
came across a
plethora of ap-
pealing dishes;
Shishkebabs,
Flounder Proven-
cal, Lemon-Dill
Chicken, Stuffed
Cornish Hens, to
mention just a
few. Exotic, certi-
fied kosher condi-
ments abound,
eliminating the
tedious task of
chopping, measuring and mix-
ing so that kosher meals have
suddenly reached out to em-
brace brand-new dimensions.
Because of the extensive va-
riety of kosher certified condi-
ments, most of these gourmet
dishes are easily duplicated at
home. There are definite ad-
vantages to special occasion,
home dining. For example, for
the price of a mediocre cham-
pagne purchased in that ritzy
restaurant, you'll be able to
spring for an award-winning
Baron de Rothschild or Moet
Chandon sipped at leisure.
Add to that, superior foods of
your choice, no hovering wait-
ers, and you don't have to fret
over who's going to drive
home...or do you get a taxi? Not
least, cooking together and dis-
covering each other's culinary
likes and dislikes can be fun.
Try it.
For romantic dining at home,
we've included a shopping list
of non-staple items needed for
this week's menu. A prepara-
tion guide is also included so
that each course is ready as
needed.
The menu below is a "dairy"
meal, impressive, and easy to
assemble.
Delicate Rosemary Cream, is
essentially a three-ingredient
recipe, courtesy of my friend
and colleague, kitchen design-
er Nancy Stern.
The egg shell holds just
enough of this rich concoction
and was served to us on arrival
at her home on a cold, wintry
afternoon — the glass of smooth
Chardonnay didn't hurt! Sun-
ny Florida was the inspiration
for the main course where over-
size chunks of salmon and col-
orful vegetables threaded onto
double skewers, then marinat-
ed in sweet-salty Soy Vay
Teriyaki Sauce, are trans-
formed into Bronzed Salmon
Shishkebab (my favorite brand
because it's thick, flavorful with
copious amounts of sesame
seeds.)
From your local farmer's
market
or
gourmet store,
baby salad greens
come washed and
clean providing
an almost instant
Mesclun Salad
with Mango. Just
add the sliced
mango and driz-
zle with one of
Blanchard &
Blanchard's Spa
salad dressings.
Honey Dijon goes
particularly well
with this light, composed salad.
For a funky, carefree dessert,
purchase meringue shells from
a good bakery. At home, fill with
chopped white chocolate, mac-
aroons soaked with Sabra
liqueur and dot with fresh rasp-
berries. If that's not decadent
enough, drizzle melted
chocolate over and top with
a generous dollop of whipped
cream.
