very healthful," says Ms. Bryk-
man.
For example, at a table near
ours, a group of German
tourists have just been seated.
"They come in every night —
they don't want to eat anywhere
else," says Ms. Brykman. 'They
just love the food."
So did the guests who en-
joyed the Garden Deli during
Passover last year. But it wasn't
easy for Chef Castro to adjust
to the restrictions for the first
time. "Imagine, you say to a
chef, You cannot cook with any
flour,' and he says, But how can
I make bread? How can I make
cake or pastries?' " relates Ms.
Brykman.
But after his initial dismay,
the chef took on the challenge
gamely. "His creativity was
amazing," says Ms. Brykman.
"He made a whole buffet menu
that changed every day." It in-
cluded gefilte fish, tsimmies,
Oriental fish, Passover pan-
cakes and "potatoes made a
thousand ways."
So successful were the buf-
fets that the restaurant is al-
ready fully booked for this

coming Passover and the chef
is already busy planning the
menu.
Even when there is no spe-
cial occasion such as Passover,
the restaurant is popular. Aca-
pulco's Jewish community is
small — about 100 year-round
residents — and there is no syn-
agogue or formal organization,
so the Garden Deli has become
an unofficial Jewish headquar-
ters for the resident Jews. "It
gives a feeling of togetherness,"
says Ms. Brykman. "It's a gath-
ering place for the Jews of Aca-
pulco."
And, of course, it's also an im-
portant place for observant Jew-
ish tourists, who come mainly
from the United States and
Canada. A kosher restaurant is
also a chance for non-observant
visitors to get acquainted with
the pleasures of kosher dining.
"People often feel that kosher
cuisine is very limited, but we've
proven that it's diversified and
as tasty as any other cuisine,"
says Ms. Brykman. "So this
gives a different perspective on
what Jewish food is all
about." I

Israel Protects Rights
Peres Tells U.N.

New York (JTA) — Address-
ing the U.N. Human Rights
Commission in Geneva,
Israeli Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres said Israel is
doing its utmost to protect
the human rights of both
Israelis and Palestinians.
Mr. Peres, who spoke
before the commission on
Feb. 10, is the first Israeli
foreign minister to address
the U.N. body, according to
the Israeli daily Ha'aretz.
In his speech, Mr. Peres
also stated that current re-
gional peacemaking in-
itiatives are not being con-
ducted under the threat of a
gun, but are taking place in
an atmosphere of mutual
respect and good will.
Last week, the commis-
sion, which is holding its
annual six- week session,
focused on human rights
issues in the administered
territories and on the
broader issue of racial dis-
crimination.
Morris Abram, a former
U.S. ambassador to the U.N.
body and now chairman of
the Geneva-based U.N. Wat-
ch, a human rights group,
spoke out forcefully last
week on the issue of anti-

Semitism, calling on the
commission to reject it ex-
plicitly in all its forms.
"The commission has
never condemned anti-
Semitism — the oldest exis-
tent form of prejudice — one
which has brought unmen-
tionable horror, terrors and
tragedies to all of mankind,"
said Mr. Abrams.
"Why should there be any
reluctance by any member
(of the commission) to con-
demn that which every
modern pope has condemn-
ed, to denounce what every
religious leader has de-
nounced?
"Let us never forget that
anti-Semitism starts with
the Jews, never stops with
the Jews and finally
destroys democratic institu-
tions and the rule of law," he
said.
Andree Farhi, represent-
ing the International Coun-
cil of Jewish Women, made a
similar demand of the corn-
mission.
"There continues to be a
blatant lack of any mention
of anti-Semitism during the
commission's annual discus-
sions on racism," Ms. Farhi
said. ❑
