said he stood by the "truth that

The Secret Relationship Between
Blacks and Jews, includes such
assertions as:
* Jews practically invented
the entire concept of slavery.
* Persecution of Jews was the
result of negative Jewish be-
havior including "monopoliza-
tions, usury, 'sharp practices'
(and) selling 'cheap' goods."
* Jewish pro-slavery views
evinced during the Civil War
continue to be held by Jews to-
day.
The Secret Relationship re-
lies on documentation — much
of it from Jewish authors — to
prove its point. Yet the book's
writers have worked systemat-
ically, meticulously to take
quotes out of context and distort
their meaning, according to
ADL Research Analyst Marc
Caplan, author of the ADL's
Jew-Hatred As History: An
Analysis of the Nation of Islam's
`The Secret Relationship
Between Blacks and Jews."
"An incredible amount of
work went into the production,
which is filled with deliberate
distortions of the truth," Mr.
Caplan said. "It is a clever and
sophisticated work of propa-
ganda — much more sophisti-
cated than anything white
supremacists have done."
Its apparent sophistication
may be one reason the book has
made such an impact.
The Secret Relationship is
"one of the most influential
books published in the black
community in recent years,"
Harvard Professor Henry Lewis
Gates Jr. wrote in a New York
Times editorial.
Professor Gates has de-
nounced the book as "an invid-
ious document of anti-
Semitism."
In Detroit, The Secret
Relationship is "selling, but it's
not just jumping off the shelves,"
said a clerk at the Shrine of the
Black Madonna Bookstore on
Livernois. (It also is for sale lo-
cally at the Nation of Islam's
Lighthouse bookstore). "People
of all ages are buying it."
The Secret Relationship is
hardly the first book to "espouse
a truth" that has no basis in fact.
The Flat-Earth Society pub-
lishes books that "prove" the
idea of a round earth is non-
sense. White racist publishers
have numerous works — such
as The Testing of Negro
Intelligence — that "scientifi-
cally prove" that blacks are in-
ferior.
The unnamed author of The
Secret Relationship also alleges
his claims are based on ir-
refutable truths, though in fact
legitimate references all show
that Jews played a very minor
role in the slave trade.
Among the frequently quot-
ed-out-of-context authors in the
Nation of Islam book is histo-
rian Bertram Korn, former pro-
fessor of American history at

Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion who has
written extensively on Jewish
history. One of the quotes The
Secret Relationship fails to note
comes from Mr. Korn's Jews
and The Negro Slavery in the
Old South:
"None of the major slave-
traders (whose sole income was
derived from purchasing, trans-
porting and selling slaves) was
Jewish, nor did Jews constitute
a large proportion of traders in
any particular community," Mr.
Korn writes.
"Frederic Bancroft, who has
made an exhaustive study of the
business, attempted to classify
all traders and auctioneers in
the major Southern markets. In
Richmond, according to his list,
only three of seventy were Jews;
in Charleston, four out of forty-
four; in Memphis, only one of
more than a dozen.
"Other standard works lim-
ited to the investigation of the
slave-trade in Kentucky and
Mississippi list many dozens
of slave-traders among whom
not a single Jewish name ap-
pears. Probably all of the
Jewish slave-traders in all of
the Southern cities and towns
combined did not buy and sell
as many slaves as did the firm
of Franklin and Armfield, the
largest Negro traders in the
South." ❑
