Mezuzot Offer An
Ethiopian Twist

hat began as a small
basement business has
blossomed into a pro-
ject so popular workers can't
keep up.
Every day, 54 Ethiopian
Jewish women meet in the
basement at the absorption
center in Kfar Sava, Israel.
There, they embroider lavish,
colorful strips used to make
covers for mezuzot. With scraps
of cotton, the women create
their own patterns, so each
mezuzah has a different design.
Sold through ESRA (En-
glish Speaking Residents
Association), the mezuzot may
be ordered in bulk only.
For information, contact
Phyllis Bloch at ESRA, P.O.

T

focus attention on the
plight of Israel's four ser-
vicemen missing in action,
and to teach Jewish youth the
concepts of pidyon shevuyim (re-
deeming captives), the Ameri-
can Zionist Movement (AZM)
has produced a 24-page cur-
riculum about the MIAs.
The curriculum is designed
for day schools and afternoon
schools and can be adapted for
use by youth groups and in oth-
er educational settings.
"Pidyon shevuyim, the mitz-
vah of redeeming captives, is an
important lesson for all," said for-
mer Detroiter Rabbi Daniel
Syme, chairman ofAZM's adult
education committee. "Our rab-
bis have argued that this mitz-
vah is of great importance, since
a hostage's affliction includes nu-
merous misfortunes such as
hunger, poverty and abuse."
Three of the MIAs — Zachary
Baumel, Yehuda Katz and Zvi
Feldman — were captured in
Lebanon in 1982. Ron Arad dis-
appeared in 1986.
Mr. Baumel, Mr. Katz and
Mr. Feldman all were taken fol-

lowing a tank battle with Syri-
an forces.
Air Force Capt. Ron Arad
vanished after parachuting from
his jet, also while over Lebanon.
He was captured and handed
over to the Iranian Revolution-
ary Guards.
With the exception of these
four men, all other Western
hostages in Lebanon were freed
three years ago.
The curriculum was prepared
by AZM Program Associate Fred
Greene in cooperation with the
education departments of the
American Zionist Youth Foun-
dation, Union of American He-
brew Congregations, Union of
Orthodox Jewish Congregations
of America, United Synagogue 0,
