Ron Brown

last week from Amman for dis-
cussions aimed at further ad-
vancing economic cooperation
between the two countries. The
visit's highlight was the sign-
ing of a memorandum of un-
derstanding establishing the
U.S.-Israel Science and Tech-
nology Commission.
The commission aims to
promote joint high technology
projects in the private sector
by establishing a data base
that will help identify promis-
ing cooperative commercial
opportunities and by address-
ing existing regulatory imped-
iments to joint projects.
The officials pointed out that

by promoting the country's eco-
nomic security the initiative
promotes the peace process.
"No input into national securi-
ty will be more important and
relevant than a growing, dy-
namic economy," Mr. Brown
said.
The commission will only act
as facilitator between busi-
nessmen in both countries who
will undertake joint projects on
a commercial basis. Unlike the
U.S.-Israel Bi-national Indus-
trial Research and Develop-
ment Fund (BIRD), the projects
will not receive government
funding. CI

Jobless Rate Up 2 Percent

There were 2 percent more peo-
ple looking for work last month
than there were in November,
according to statistics released
last week by the Israeli Labor
and Social Affairs Ministry.
While the number of job-
seekers, seasonally adjusted,
climbed to 117,800 from
115,500 in November and

114,700 in October, in Decem-
ber 1993, the number of job-
seekers, seasonally adjusted,
stood at 145,300.
The average monthly figure
for job-seekers in 1993 was
124,400, while for 1992 it was
142,500. Thus, there was a
drop of 18,100 or 12 percent last
year.
