an there be anything
more rewarding than
having that one wish fi-
nally come true as the
new year begins?
This is the exciting thing that
has happened to John
Darakjian.
When he came to Detroit in
1961, a burning ambition ac-
companied him ... Getting a job
was a main priority . . . After all,
John did have to eat . . . But
having a family and someday a
big business with everyone un-
der one roof, working together,
was a fervent goal.
He had to have a wife first,
and fate stepped in when a
friend introduced them in May,
32 years ago . . . He married
Bergy six months later ... John
had no job yet and they lived in
a flat above his brother on West
Chicago.
It was a difficult struggle for
John and Bergy Darakjian .. .
The future didn't look too rosy
... But his vision never faltered
. . . He got a job doing repair and
design work for Frederick's
Jewelry, knowing that this was
the beginning of that goal he

in the Metropolitan Building
and 1967 saw the birth of their
second son, Armen.
The big move came in 1971
when John and Bergy moved
their small operation to the Ad-
vance Building on Greenfield
. . . Ara was only 8 years old but
helped by marking price tags,
weighing and stacking mer-
chandise.
John was looking ahead .. .
By this time, he already had the
Advance Building's largest jew-
elry store . . . However, it still
wasn't enough . . . A second
store was opened in 1984 at the
Franklin Center Building on
Franklin off Northwestern.
It was a beautiful store, but
had done something John nev-
er wanted . . . separate the fam-
ily . . . John and Bergy were in
the Advance Building . . . and
Ara and Armen were on
Franklin.
And so came the big move
. . . the realization of that won-
derful dream John Darakjian
knew would some day come
true . . . visioning wife Bergy
and sons Ara and Armen
together under one roof in

John, Bergy, Ara and Armen Darakjlan.

would one day reach . . . and
then left to work for Cavanagh
Jewelry in the Metropolitan
Building on John R in down-
town Detroit.
John and Bergy bought a
home on Kinlock in Redford
where he worked in the base-
ment while she did their books
55 hours a week . . . This is also
where the first of two sons, Ara,
was born . . . John was a proud
man ... Things were beginning
to fall into place . . . In 1964, he
opened his own little business

an all-encompassing jewelry
operation.
There is no more Advance
Building store or offices or
Franklin Center jewelry oper-
ation . . . Everything has been
consolidated under one roof in
the take-over of an entire 8,600-
foot building at 29333 North-
western Highway, between
Franklin and Inkster roads.
John has his family together
under one huge roof in a suc-
cessful jewelry business.
His dream might have been

a big one but the vision could
not have been as big as the re-
ality it is today . . . John, Bergy,
Ara (vice president and direc-
tor of operations) and Armen
(vice president and manager)
are together . . . and Darakjian
Jewelers has become a giant
among giants.
This is the kind of place John
said he would someday own
. . . A place with his family
where others would look and
gape in admiration ... Not only
does the new store have one of
the area's largest selections of
jewelry, but name brands and
custom-made jewelry make up
about 65 percent of its sales.
Darakjian is also among the
major retailers of Swiss watches
in Michigan, with over 30 per-
cent of its volume accounted for
by the stylized timepieces.
Over 1,000 watches from 13
different lines are on the
premises . . . And Darakjian
also has the beautiful and
much-coveted Hour Lavigne
clock selection, all hand-made
in France of baccarat crystal
and 24-karat gold-plated brass.
John never gave a thought to
a toll-free number
back in 1965, and it
would have been far-
thest from his mind
to even have one .. .
However, today's
free service line
(1-800-228-7140)
gives nationwide ac-
cess to the store .. .
Or its own "Karat
Club" where mem-
bers are eligible to
receive gifts.
What he did want
was what he knew
best . . . a place
where custom-made
jewelry could be de-
signed and crafted . .
. and sold right then
and there . . . by his
family.
The new, large
and luxurious
Darakjian Jewelers has an all-
glass entrance, six backlit photo
billboards displayed in the three
front windows, a crystal area
which it never had before, dis-
playing vases, figurines, can-
dlesticks, paperweights, etc.; a
conference room, three private
rooms for sales, a sitting area,
bar with juices, soft drinks, teas
and coffees, blue walls, ma-
hogany walls, black walls, white
walls, gray walls, offices, etc...
including over 50 counters that
make John and Bergy shake
