books, play games, etc. . . . and
have so much fun they probably
hope their parents take all night
to dine and relax.
This is just one of the
Buster's Bay of today's features
as it works hard in a fervent
desire to be known as a good
neighborhood family restau-
rant.
Youngsters dining in the
restaurant with Mom and Dad
or whoever have their own
Guppy Menu in a separate little
binder . . . The children are
given crayons and placemats to
color, plus a Sippy Cup with
plastic straw for juice or pop to
take home with them.
George Kalergis, graduate of
the Culinary Institute of Amer-
ica, was sous chef when Buster's
Bay opened . . . Today he is
executive chef and a master at
seafood preparation . . . About
60-70 percent of the restaurant
staff has been there since open-
ing . . . and trained with expe-
rience . . . Fine waiter Theo
Bageris was at Pegasus, Kings-
ley, Guest Quarters and Aris-
tocrat, but admits the
experience at Buster's Bay has

and quality is up.

made him, along with other
waitpersons, better servers.
Ray Hanson, general man-
ager since March, was food and
beverage manager at the Ritz-
Carlton Dearborn two years;
manager for Les Gruber two
years at the London Chop
House; and back there another
three years when a combine
took it over in 1989 . . . Ray was
at the Chop when Jimmy
Schmidt did his kitchen magic
. . . Hy Vogel painted those car-
icatures and Jose Reyes was the
most popular bartender in
town.
Buster's Bay serves about
2,500 pounds of fish a week
. . . Best sellers are white fish,
salmon and swordfish . . . Live
lobsters roam in a 1,000-gallon
saltwater tank.
Some 3,500 people a week
came to Buster's Bay when it
opened . . . Today the count is
down to 2,500 ... Folks thought
it was too expensive so Jimmy
and his staff regrouped from a
la carte to meals that include
vegetable, starch, mixed salad,
cup of soup (actually a 12-ounce
bowl) and bread basket.
All baking of breads and
pastries is done right at Buster's
Bay . . . So is the ice cream .. .
Pastry Chef Robert Bennett has
also been there from the begin-
ning.
Jimmy Schmidt is at Buster's
Bay one or two days a week
helping George and conducting
training classes for their
employees.

It took $1.6 million to re-
model Buster's Bay from before
. . . But the big emphasis has
been only on quality and
service.
Jimmy and Mike want it to
be known as a good neighbor-
hood restaurant to get good fish
meals . . . and have succeeded.
CONGRATS . . . to Dr. Mar-
shall and Dee Shapiro . . . on
their 30th anniversary.
Dee and Marshall's mantel
at home now has 124 trophies
won by her in 10 years of ball-
room dancing competition .. .
She won 23 more (14 first, six
second, three third places) at
the recent Ohio Star Ball in
Columbus' Hyatt Regency Cen-
ter . . . It is the Buckeye State's
largest dance competition .. .
with over 7,000 watching the
more than 1,000 terpsi dandies.

port at Marvin's Marvelous Me-
chanical Museum on Orchard
Lake Road . . . A cool 100 per-

Year's Eve in Vegas have been
donated to Temple Beth Sha-
lom in Las Vegas . . . The own-
er of the Fitzgerald Hotel and.
Casino is not Jewish ... and the
$1,000 ducats will be raffled off
in a $50 drawing . . . with all
proceeds going to the temple
. . . Only 200 will be sold, but
that comes to a tidy $10,000 for
the Beth Shalom coffers.
HOW ABOUT auctioning off
some kishke to raise money?
. . . Don't laugh, three stuffed
dermas brought $1,200 for Yad
Ezra at the recent Congregation
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses bar
mitzvah party of Jeremy Man-
son, son of Mark and Marcia
Manson.
JANE CITRON loves Bette
Midler ... So what better birth-
day gift than a couple of fifth-
row ducats from hubby Ed
Citron to see Bette recently at
Masonic Temple.
But the biggest gift at Jane's
50th was seeing her mother,
Katie Goldfine, recuperating in
a convalescent home from a
broken hip, coming into Arriva
Italia . . . wheelchair and all.
BERME MORAY, head of
Gorman's, has been named
1993 Retailer Of The Year .. .
He was given the annual award
