Israeli Chain
Plans Stores

Gun Industries will invest al-
most $4 million in
establishing a chain of stores in
Brazil next year. The com-
modities firm will export its
Chicco baby products to Brazil
under the name Tutto Chicco.
During the first stage in
1994, Gun and other investors
will establish 12 stores. The
first stores are scheduled to be
opened in Rio de Janeiro, Recife
and San Paolo.

Lower Inflation
Rate Predicted

Inflation will only reach about
8 percent next year, according
to a study by the Federation of
Israeli Chambers of Commerce.
Israel's economic growth will be
6.2 perecnt, as long as immi-
gration continues at the 80,000
annual level, according to the
study. The civilian work force
will grow 3 percent to 1.99 mil-
lion people and unemployment
will drop to 9.75 percent.
The study also predicted the
U.S. dollar will continue to grow
stronger against European cur-
rencies.

Israeli Paper
Shuts Down

Tel Aviv (JTA) — After mon-
ths of rumors that it was suf-
fering deep financial prob-
lems, the Israeli afternoon
tabloid Hadashot has folded.
The daily newspaper's 40
editorial staff members and
managers learned by tele-
phone that they need not
report for work, as the paper
had just published its last
issue.
The paper's present losses
are said to exceed $30 mill-
ion.
Hadashot, which means
news, was established 10
years ago by the Ha'aretz
publishing company, which
publishes the prestigious
Ha'aretz daily broadsheet
newspaper and several
weekly publications.
The tabloid, established by
publisher Amos Schocken,
had been positioned to corn-
pete with the popular Yediot
Achronot and Mcz'ariu after-
noon newspapers.
But its youthful staff and
dovish slant failed to attract
a substantial segment of the
public, and its circulation
peaked at about 30,000. ❑
