Israel Requests
Natural Gas Bids
S
ix international energy
construction firms have
been asked to submit
bids for the building of
facilities to process natural gas
for the production of electrici-
ty, the Israel Energy Ministry
said.
The firms, which have also
been requested to bid on trans-
porting natural gas, are SRI
from the United States, Bate-
man from South Africa, Arthur
D. Little and British Gas from
England, Sofregas from France
and Tractebel from Belgium.
The firms have been asked
to give bids on three different
circumstances for bringing nat-
ural gas into the country.
The first two methods are
for liquid natural gas contain-
ers to be brought via ship. The
companies have been asked to
make a separate study for
bringing the gas to a Mediter-
ranean port and to Eilat.
The companies have also
been asked to make a study of
bringing natural gas via
pipeline from Egypt.
The ministry hopes to re-
ceive the completed bids with-
in the month and choose a
winner, a ministry spokes-
woman said. If all goes well,
the ministry hopes to choose a
company to have a feasibility
study completed by early next
year.
Sales Of Homes
Rise In Israel
H
ousing sales in Israel's 24
largest cities rose 20 per-
cent during the third
quarter from the previ-
ous three months, the Central
Bureau of Statistics reported.
Although sales shot up, the
stock of unsold housing contin-
ued climbing, rising 4 percent
compared to the previous quar-
ter.
According to the bureau's
survey, there were increased
apartment sales in the initial
and final stages of construction,
while there was a drop of sales
on apartments in the midst of
being built.
All but small apartments ex-
perienced increased sales.
Sales were brisk in the fol-
lowing cities during the third
quarter: Ashdod, Ashkelon,
Beersheba, Bat Yam, Givatay-
im, Holon, Haifa, Netanya,
Petah Tikva, Kiryat Ata, Ris-
hon Letzion, Rehovot, Ramat
Gan, Ramat Hasharon and Tel
Aviv.
By contrast, sales dropped in
Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, Her-
zliya, Hadera, Kfar Sava and
Ra'anana.
The supply of new housing
rose during the third quarter,
primarily due to the increase in
housing starts during that pe-
riod, increasing to 8,610 units
from 7,870 units in the previ-
ous quarter.
