T
he children of Core City
Neighborhood are getting
some much-needed help.
The Jewish Communi-
ty Council's city-suburban re-
lations committee is attempting
to answer their plea. Volunteer
tutors are traveling to Detroit
to help.
Core City includes Wayne
State University and sur-
rounding areas. Its goal, run
under Sister Theresa Blac-
quiere, is to help residents of
the Core City area prosper —
from housing and development
programs to rehabilitation,
training and employment place-
ment — and make the city
more livable.
Council. "We're not isolated
from the city. Much of our econ-
omy depends upon it. The con-
cept of tzedakah makes this an
important endeavor as well."
So far, six committee mem-
bers are tutoring on a regular
basis. More are needed.
The program especially ap-
pealed to Southfield resident
Aaron Ozrovitz.
During the day, Mr. Ozrovitz
spends his hours running a
company that childproofs
homes. He said he's concerned
about children and their fu-
tures. He also wants to make a
difference in the city of Detroit.
"We hear so much negative
about the city. People complain

Its HAS (Hangin' After
School) program meets at Trin-
ity Episcopal Church and pro-
vides youths with a snack,
activities, programming and tu-
toring. About 40 students meet
from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday
through Thursday.
They need help with their
homework. So city-suburban re-
lations volunteers are going
back to the basics — assisting
with adjectives and algebra.
"Committee members said
they wanted to work more
hands-on," said Sondra
Schwartz, intern for the JC-
about it but they don't want to
do anything about it," Mr.
Ozrovitz said.
Mr. Ozrovitz has scheduled
time to tutor once a week.
"'The children want to learn,
but often they do not have the
guidance at home — the par-
ents or parent is working or
doesn't have enough schooling
to help the child. It's important
for these kids to know they're
not in this alone. It's important
for them to know young people
care about them and the city,"
Mr. Ozrovitz said. ❑
Caring For Elderly:
Whose Job Is It?
JENNIFER FINER JEWISH NEWS INTERN
etroiters Jerry Cohen, his
brother Hershel and sis-
ter Glorya Traute have
been caring for their el-
derly parents for six years.
But according to Halachah,
Jewish law, it's not necessarily
their responsibility.
Last week, Cleveland Rab-
bi Yaakov Feitman, of Young
Israel of Beachwood, told an au-
dience at Young Israel of Green-
field that caring for the elderly
is a community responsi-bility,
according to Halachah.
Although Jewish law states
no obligation, Rabbi Feitman
said a child should feel a moral
responsibility to care for an ail-
ing parent.
