Awards Made
To Rescuers
New York (JTA) — Two
weeks before the opening of
the film on his extraordinary
wartime deeds, Oskar
Schindler was honored for
his rescue of more than
1,000 Jews.
In ceremonies punctuated
by sobs, Emilie Schindler,
the businessman's widow,
accepted awards and ac-
colades on behalf of her hus-
band and herself this week
in New York and Washing-
ton.
During the war, Oskar
Schindler convinced the
Nazi authorities that the
1,100 Jews employed in his
bogus munitions factory
were essential to the Ger-
man war effort.
With this ploy, which sur-
vivors called an act of moral
courage, Mr. Schindler and
his wife were able to save all
of the "Schindler juden."
Oskar Schindler, who died
in 1974, was honored last
week by the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum.
At the ceremony in Wash-
ington, Emilie Schindler ac-
cepted the museum's Medal
of Remembrance from
Supreme Court Justice Ruth
Bader Ginsburg.
The awards coincide with
the release of Steven
Spielberg's movie
Schindler's List.0

New President
For Sports Hall
Myron Milgrom, one of the orig-
inal organizers of the Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame
(MJSHF), has been elected its
1994 president. He succeeds
Mickey Fishman.
Mr. Milgrom is one of five
people who founded the organ-
ization in 1985. Active in many
philanthropic Jewish groups,
he is also a past president of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Other officers elected were
vice-presidents Hy Dorfman,
Jim Grossman, William Hertz,
Nate Pollack, Sidney Weinstein;
secretary Dr. Stuart Kirschen-
baum; and treasurer Michael
Applebaum.
The MJSHF is dedicated
to fostering Jewish identity
through sports, promoting
youth activities on national and
international levels and partic-
ipating in other worthwhile
projects having a positive affect
on the Jewish community.
