ple together to dialogue," he
said.
."We should bring the arms
of the movement together,
like Reform. We have yet to
be a unified movement,"
said Alan Ades, the United
Synagogue's new president.
"We need to work with the
other agencies of the move-
ment, because we share
common concerns. We strive
to speak with one voice."
Though the movement's
most influential leaders
have traditionally propelled
the ideological evolution of
Conservative Judaism from
the seminary, the leaders of
the United Synagogue are
convinced that the center of
power is shifting to them.
One of the reasons is econ-
omic. The seminary, which
has experienced budgetary
difficulties in recent years,
used to be the movement's
fund-raising focus and, until
two years ago, supplied
$600,000 annually to the
United Synagogue.
The congregational arm
has since made up that
shortfall with its own fund-
raising efforts, said Rabbi
Epstein.
"The lay arm is becoming
more involved in the area of
ideology, because they real-
ize the link between that
and the success of the
movement," he said.
As Ades, the new presi-
dent, put it, the energy of the
movement is now in the con-
gregations.
Dutch Police
Nab Vandals
Amsterdam (JTA) — Dutch
police have arrested six
youths for the desecration in
late August of a Jewish
cemetery in Middelburg, the
capital of the southwest
province of Zeeland.
The youths, who are bet-
ween the ages of 16 and 19,
daubed swastikas and anti-
Semitic slogans on 25 tomb-
stones of the old Sephardic
cemetery as well as on
buildings in other locations
in Middelburg.
The vandalism provoked
widespread indignation
among the local populace,
who staged a large march to
protest the desecrations.
Three of the youths were
later released by the police
on a provisional basis. But
the other three, all 17 years
old and considered the most
hard-core members of the
group Nazi Front Zeeland,
remained in police custody
after racist materials were
found in their homes. ❑
