ones. From what I hear, men-
tal health services are gain-
ing popularity in the former
Soviet Union...
"It's finally been said that,
yes, there are problems and
they should be dealt with by
psychologists —not with vod-
ka."
Ms. Gassel says many of
her clients are bobbies and
zaydes, who, in the Soviet
Union, were accustomed to
living with their grandchil-
dren and playing a significant
part in rearing them.
"But here, children Amer-
icanize so fast. Before you
know it, they're busy and
don't need grandparents as
much. The grandparents feel
displaced and depressed," Ms.
Gassel says.
A major difference between
Ms. Gassel's American and
Russian clients is the latter
often approach her with con-
crete issues. They say: My
problem would be solved if I
had a job, another car, more
money. Americans, on the
other hand, frequently con-
sult her about issues of self-
esteem.
"Russian culture is not
used to thinking in terms of
self-esteem," she says. "Amer-
icans check it out like a
pulse."
But underneath, many
seemingly concrete issues fac-
ing emigres are, in fact, is-
sues of self-esteem. Ms.
Gassel tries to help them
come to terms with their loss
of status and friends, loss of
a homeland, loss of a niche.
Ms. Gassel and Sandy Hy-
man, director of Resettlement
Service, hope to start a group
therapy session for members
of the Russian community.
But once again, they've run
into resistance. It's all a mat-
ter of trust. But both women
are hopeful.
"I feel that it would be very
helpful for our refugee clients,
for the same reason it's help-
ful to everybody," Ms. Gassel
said. "It's always helpful to
know you're not alone." 111
