The tale of Star Deli is an
amazing success story . . . No
one could ever foresee that this
little 1200-square-foot opera-
tion would some day produce
so much volume . . . or that its
600-square-foot kitchen would
be able to provide so many
home-cooked Jewish traditional
foods . . . or that the little store
was capable of an orderly cus-
tomer parade in such huge,
continuous proportions ... sur-
rounded by enough food now to
feed that entire camp in Siberia.
When Ed Kircidel originally
opened Star Deli, May 1968, it
was in the first strip mall of the
area . . . and one of only a few
stores there at the time ... Tel-
12 Mall was just being built.
The teeming corner of 12
Mile and Telegraph is today one
of the busiest intersections in
Oakland County . . . and just
yards away to the west is this
little Star Deli that has quietly
grown into a Goliath of tasteful
goodness.
The remarkable accomplish-
ments of Sid and his son Harry
Neuman have far overshad-
owed their wildest dreams .. .
Nobody in the most emotional
of imaginations could ever en-
vision that Star Deli would
some day become such a giant
in the Jewish carry-out world:
Certainly Sid can only shake
his head when looking around
at the untold amount of food
carried by Star and recalling
those lean days in Poland and
Siberia.
The only lean thing Sid
knows today is the corned beef
he sells.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE a
year makes? ... Make that two
. . . In 1991 it was Bernadette
Peters . . . 1992 had Ann-Mar-
garet . . . both were entertainer
disappointments.
1993 for JARC was a differ-
ent story . . . like night and day
. . . as a scintillating Rockettes
variety revue had people ap-
plauding lustily.

A tiny deli does
big business.

The gorgeous costuming .. .
precision dancing and strutting
. . . magic and singing . . . made
for an excellent and exciting
evening of joyous entertain-
ment.
JARC (Jewish Association
For Residential Care), for per-
sons with developmental dis-
abilities, in itself is a wonderful
cause to support . . . The Rock-
ettes' presentation was a most
delicious icing on the cake.
Large dollar numbers were
raised to aid JARC . . . as the
packed Fox Theatre enjoyed a
spectacular evening . . . Those
who didn't show up this year

really missed out.

CONGRATS . . . to Gilbert
Fink . . . on his 90th birthday.

Broadway.
ALTHOUGH IT does not
have an open door, New Mod-
ern Bakery, owned by Stuart
Spilkowitz, can be classified
among the kosher bakeries in
town . . . It is certified kosher
from Kof-K, and its traditional
hearth-baked Jewish breads
and rolls and Rosen's reduced-
calorie bread can be gotten at
all leading supermarkets.
New Modern has been at the
same location on Linwood and
Fullerton since 1936 . . . It is
much larger than the original,
and still the only bakery
around with an authentic brick
oven with which bread is made
by hand.
Much of its baking is still
done the old-fashioned way . .
. Along with Zeman's, New
Modern continues to use fresh
onions for its onion rolls, New
Yorkers, onion bread, etc.
IN PRE-STATE Israel, the
name Eritrea was infamous as
the place where Jewish under-
ground members were sent as
punishment by the British
rulers of Palestine.
Things are different now .. .
Israel has been an independent
country for over 45 years and
Eritrea, too, finally gained its
independence from neighboring
Ethiopia after years of bitter
strife.
In October, Eritrean Presi-
dent Osias came to address the
United Nations General As-
sembly together with others
from member states, and as a
side trip went to Potomac, Md.,
to take part in the wedding of
former localite Gilead Kapen to
Karen Brechtel . His parents,
Dr. and Mrs. Sheldon Kapen,
still reside here.
Gilead is minority consultant
to the House Subcommittee on
Africa, visiting African coun-
tries and getting to know their
people and leaders on a per-
sonal basis . . . With the Eritre-
ans, he formed special ties and
invited President Osias to take
part in his wedding by holding
one of the chuppah poles while
wearing a white kippah.
