ing a chance, that some day it
might be given back. And there
was plenty of mom in the Negev
and Galilee for them to express
their pioneering spirit. I think
they're going to endure real
pain, and we have to help them
endure it, they must be com-
pensated. But peace is coming,
and they're the victims of that.
Yet they're also going to bene-
fit — they're going to lose their
houses, but they're going to gain
their country. And when they
hold the barn-raising at their
Western Galilee resettlement
program, be there."
Ms. Tayar won't be present.
There are winners and losers in
every political upheaval, and if
this one rumbles to its conclu-
sion, Mr. Peck will gain the Is-
rael of his ideals and Ms. Tayar
will lose the Israel of hers.
"I don't see myself pulling out
of Beit Horon and moving to
Jerusalem or Tel Aviv," she
said. "If it gets to that point, I
don't think Beit Horon will be
any less safe than any other
place in Israel, and I'd just have
to take it from there. I did not
bring four children into the
world to have them killed by
fundamentalists, and I would
have to say to myself, 'Maybe
it's time to take my family back
to America."
Scout Pledge
Offers Option
Minneapolis (JTA) —
Thanks in part to the efforts
of a national Jewish group,
the Girl Scouts of the USA
has voted to allow for
greater diversity in their
historic pledge.
Unlike for the Boy Scouts,
for girls who so choose, the
word "God" may go.
Delegates to the Girl
Scouts' national convention,
held Oct. 22-24 in Min-
neapolis, voted 1,560 to 375
in favor of allowing girls to
substitute alternative spiri-
tual wording.
The pledge says: "On my
honor I will try to serve God
and my country, to help peo-
ple at all times and to live by
the Girl Scout law."
Members of the National
Jewish Girl Scouts Com-
mittee supported a move
toward greater flexibility in
the pledge.
"The Jewish membership
had never had any problem
with the promise," but "they
were sensitive to the issue of
those girls who might be
made to feel uncomfortable
with the specific wording,"
said Carol Wirtschafter,
committee delegate. ❑
