STAY WARM, STAY OUTSIDE
The Synchilla Snap -T is a Patagonia staple.
Original (11-oz.) Synchilla pile is an
excellent insulation layer: it's exceedingly
warm for its weight, and its quick to dry.

something. There I was, an ex-

burn the American flag, cele-

turnaround. Being part of a
fighting left was important to
me, but now being part of a left
that has become the establish-

going to have to give up fight-

put our adolescence behind us."
And now it is Ms. Tayar, the

tally alienated from her nation's
authorities.
Strolling through Beit Horon,
she saw a couple of policemen
and muttered sarcastically, "are
they coming to arrest me? Have
I done something wrong?"
She was harassed and tear-
gassed by police at the right-
wing's giant protest in
Jerusalem, and saw women
and children being clubbed.
"This prime minister is not
my prime minister," she said.
"Rabin is pushing us towards a
civil war. Unfortunately, I think
it could happen, even if nobody
wants it."
She has a nightmare scenario
of Palestinian autonomy: she is
driving up to a West Bank road-
block manned jointly by Pales-
tinian police and Israeli soldiers,
and the Palestinians start fir-
ing at her car, while the Israelis
just watch.
"I hope I don't end up shoot-
ing one of our soldiers," she said,
"but if somebody's in danger in
my car, I'm not going to take
that much time to figure out
who's who."
Mr. Peck has his own vision
of what the future holds for
people like Ms. Tayar: "I had a
dream that Israel's house-
warming gift to the Palestinian
state would be the settlements.
We always knew there was a
reason we were building them,
and they turned out to be a gift
to the Palestinians, a way of
saying, 'Welcome home.' "
He has mixed feelings to-
wards the settlers. Some, he
said readily, are real pioneers.
"I respect their courage," he
said. "But my sympathy is lim-
ited. Anyone who moved to the
West Bank knew they were tak-
