Escape Fires
Los Angeles (JTA) — Jewish
institutions in the Greater
Los Angeles area again
escaped destruction and
damage as the second series
of firestorms within five
days took a fresh toll of more
than 200 homes.
Hardest hit was Malibu,
the oceanside residence of
the rich and famous, and ad-
jacent Pacific Palisades.
Both have sizable Jewish
communities.
The Malibu Jewish Center
and Synagogue, a
Reconstructionist congrega-
tion, had the closest call,
with flames leaping to
within 15 feet of the struc-
ture.
Rabbi Benjamin Herson
credited heroic work by
firefighters for saving the
temple and described the
survival as "our own
miracle."
Although ordered by
firefighters to leave the
area, Rabbi Herson persuad-
ed them to let him stay out-
side the building throughout
the night and to carry three
Torah scrolls to safety.
Temple President Stewart
Seidner patrolled the area,
trying to track down mem-
bers of the 150-family con-
gregation who were isolated
and without telephone ser-
vice.
Residents are still barred
from the Malibu area, mak-
ing an assessment of damage
difficult, but at least one
Jewish family was known to
have lost its home. Three
Jewish summer camps and
conference centers in the
area survived unharmed.
Kehillath Israel in Pacific
Palisades, another
Reconstructionist syn-
agogue, was also evacuated.
Some of its members said
they felt as if they were liv-
ing in a war zone.
Twenty miles inland
across the Santa Monica
Mountains, Kol Tikvah
Congregation in threatened
Woodland Hills remained
open as a Red Cross shelter
throughout the night.
The temple's rabbi, Steven
Jacobs, said that one 9-year-
old girl told him, "Please
don't let my home burn and
I'll be a good girl for the rest
of my life."
Her prayer was answered
when her home was spared.
The Jewish Federation
Council of Greater Los
Angeles mobilized agencies
and synagogues to extend fi-
nancial, material and
counseling aid to afflicted
Jewish families. El
