he doesn't wear wings
. . . has no halo that you
can see . . . but when
Helen Zuckerman smiles
or speaks, folks sort of get the
feeling that a celestial being is
among them.
Helen is the angel supreme
of an organization which she
and her late husband, Paul
Zuckerman, founded in 1985 to
fight what he died from, blad-
der cancer . . . in the search for
a cure, among other cancer re-
search programs.

But John Bloom was disap-
pointed . . . He loves Beluga
Russian caviar and had to do
without.
Dave Hermelin told jokes to
folks before dinner from his vast
repertoire . . . and also men-
tioned that the Jewish Federa-
tion was investigating another
Miracle Mission to Israel in
1995 . . . If this comes to pass,
all those people who kicked
themselves for not going in
April had better start making
plans.

matic member of her heavenly
flock, and to date almost $2 mil-
lion has been raised.
Around 160 people paid
$2,000 per couple to attend the
recent eighth annual black-tie
gala which raised more than
$185,000 at Ritz-Carlton Hotel
. . . despite the fact that a num-
ber of charitable affairs were be-
ing held the same evening .. .
Such a shame that they can't be
coordinated to fall on other
dates so that all worthy chari-
ties can benefit.
The five little angels, children
of the Ritz-Carlton staff, were
there again for the second year
. . . in the hotel foyer greeting
people as they entered . . . When
Helen stood with them, the il-
lumination she radiates was a
godsend for photographers, who
didn't need flashbulbs.
You couldn't ask for much
better passed hors d'oeuvres
. . . crabmeat puff, brie cheese
mousse with fruit, smoked
salmon with red caviar, coconut
almond shrimp, potato pan-
cakes wtih sour cream or ap-
out, with excellent and gracious
Ritz-Carlton waitpersons serv-
ing the choices of Helen and
Mary Matuja . lobster ragout
in puff pastry, salad of mixed
greens, Jicama julienne, flow-
erette carrots and tomato with
hazelnut vinaigrette dressing
... filet of beef with bordelaise
sauce or poached salmon;
duchesse potato, garnishes or
asparagus, julienne carrots and
spaghetti squash; pastry tulip
dessert filled with grand
marnier sauce and an assort-
ment of fresh berries . . . The
after-dinner variety of truffles
at a coffee station was out-
standing.
The special, elegant napkins,
tablecloths and beautiful table
floral arrangements were per-
sonally ordered by Helen, who
received a lot of exercise get-
ting up so many times her
name was mentioned ... So did
the people who arose and ap-
plauded Helen each time.
On the stage, emcee David
again sang his own lyrics for an-
other Sweetest Day song to
Helen using the tune of "A
You're Adorable" . . . Dave Pol-
lack was home with flu symp-
toms, but wife Pauline
represented both . . . Florence
Seyburn and John Olejnik beat
everyone in the amount of
dance time to Mark Phillips'
rhythms.
Bruce Rosen with the always
present Variety gold heart on
his suit jacket sleeve for him
and wife Rosalie . . . Our table
in awe at the show put on by di-
versified pianist Pierre Fraca-
lanza . . . Brenda and Ira Jaffe,
Gretchen and Frank Hitch,
Trudy and Arthur Weiss, and
Olga and Iry Dworkin . .
Strange "accompaniment" to
Pierre was music at a wedding
in the next door ballroom.
Three weeks prior to the
affair, Doug Schubot didn't have
his bowtie at the office for
another shindig, so took one
from the case at his Jules
Schubot Jewelers in Troy . . . It
was such a hit that he has been
wearing it ever since . . . The
jeweled collar adornment is a
$25,000 bowtie of black onyx,
gold and diamonds . . . Wife
Sydell also wore part of the
former inventory.
Mort and Irene Crim able to
relax as members of the audi-
ence . . . Leslie and Miriam Col-
burn, Fred and Cathy Yaffee,
Tom and Maxine Ashcroft, Dr.
Herbert Bloom and Alice
Gilbert, Hy and Lucille Dorf-
man, Ruth Freuhoff the life of
the party; Doreen Hermelin al-
ways so sweet . . . she must be
some kind of special to keep up
with David; Paul Zlotoff, Bar-
Ilan activist with wife Linda,
going around shaking hands
but definitely not running for
office . . . Beautiful dessert al-
most too pretty to eat . . . very
few not guilty, however, of mak-
ing all gone.
Each year, the Michigan
Cancer Foundation Angels af-
fair is another tribute to Helen
and the late Paul Zuckerman
. . . Their eight-year-old dream
is not only a very solid reality,
but today one of the main fac-
tors enhancing the research and
education programs which have
seen MCF make tremendous
strides in the fight against
cancer.
Which only goes to prove that
angels not only have dreams,
but can also make them come
true . . . Helen on earth and
Paul guiding from above.
