here is much more to
sports than meets the
eye these days. Tradi-
tionalathletic endeav-
or is now backed up by a bat-
tery of high-tech equipment
operated by medical
professionals.
The Center for Research
and Sports Medical Science at
Israel's Wingate Institute for
Physical Education and Sport
utilizes state-of-the-art lasers,
sophisticated laboratories,
computers and ultrasound
equipment to enhance sports
performance for both budding
Olympic medalists and
members of the public simp-
ly wishing to keep fit.
Dr. Yoni Yarom, director of
the center, describes his
facilities as unique in Israel
and among the best in the
world. "We take a multi-
dimensional approach," he
adds, "with four major areas
of activity: overcoming
medical problems related to
sport, physiology, biody-
namics and psychology."
When asked to identify those
areas in which the center
plays a leading international
role, Dr. Yarom speaks of
research and application into
sports for asthmatics as well
as psychology in sports.
Asthma sufferers can today
attend the center to exercise
in specially designed
laboratories. Their lung func-
tioning is treated before and
after exercise, and a sports
training program suited for
each individual is prescribed.
The center also specializes in
devising sports agendas for
paraplegics, amputees and
people with other disabilities.
The center is frequently
visited by overseas athletes
who compete in Israel. The
Wingate Institute itself is us-
ed as a winter training
retreat for the German na-
tional Olympic team, who
take advantage of Israel's
mild Mediterranean climate.
