JARC Starts Group
For Young Adults

he Jewish Association for
Residential Care (JARC)
has formed a young adult
committee to reach out to
developmentally disabled Jews
through activities like double
dates and fund-raisers.
Leaders of JARC, which pro-
vides homes and services to peo-
ple with developmental
disabilities, believe the organi-
zation should include more
young adults. Right now, the
JARC board is comprised pri-
marily of people in their 40s and
50s.
"Current leaders realize that
it's important to get the next
generation involved," said 26-
year-old Stephanie Jacobson,
who is co-chairperson of the
committee with her husband,
David. "Young adults can
act as role models and friends
to the developmentally disabled.
The committee can serve as an
outlet for all young adults to
grow."
Since its inception nearly five
months ago, the committee has
attracted nearly 35 people to its
planning meetings. Members
hope their committee soon will
include JARC clients — devel-
opmentally disabled individu-
als who live in JARC homes or
use the organization's services.
The committee's first formal
event will be a "pre-glow" to the
premier performance of "The
Rockettes" to be held Nov. 9 at
the Fox Theatre. Young adults
who buy show tickets for at least
$50 are automatically invited to
wine and dine on hors d'oeuvres
with their peers from JARC.

Ms. Jacobson hopes the pre-
glow will attract about 250
young adults. The purpose is not
only to raise money for JARC,
but also to raise awareness
about the need it fills, she said.
Of the 200 individuals JARC
serves, many are young adults
with the same social needs
and feelings as anyone else.
Some JARC clients have
boyfriends and girlfriends. Some
are married.

"I would definitely
double-date with a
JARC couple.
It would really
be a mutually
beneficial
experience."

Caryn Nessel

Caryn Nessel decided to join
the new committee after re-
turning from the Michigan
Miracle Mission. Ms. Nessel,
who works at the Jewish
Federation, traveled in Israel on
a bus with JARC clients.
"I was impressed with the
way they all worked together
and what they were all about,"
she said. "I would definitely dou-
ble-date with a JARC couple.
It would really be a mutually
beneficial experience."

mittee, call 352-JARC.
