ly lived. In contrast, works by
Tchaikovsky should be played
with rich and warm sounds to
recall the music in
Tchaikovsky's time, he said.
Mr. Miller spends hundreds
of hours every month speaking
before school and community
groups to encourage their en-
thusiasm for symphonic music.
His wife, attorney Andrea
Oser, shares a deep apprecia-
tion for music and sings with a
choral group that soon will per-
form with the Albany Sym-
phony in a program of Copland
songs.
Away from music they show-
case for others, the two enjoy
riding bikes, playing tennis, go-
ing to the movies and taking
the short trip to New York City
to experience the latest plays
and concerts.
In connection with his work,
Mr. Miller will be going on a
much longer trip this summer
when he tours Europe with the
Australian National Youth Or-
chestra.
"I think of conducting as a
constant process of refining
one's ideas and trying to find
the meaning in the music, the
truth in the music and the best
way to interpret the music,"
Mr. Miller said.
"I believe that if a conductor
really serves music, then that
will come across to the orches-
tra, to .the audience and to
everybody."
David Alan Miller will con-
duct the Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra at 10:45 a.m. and 8
p.m. Nov. 5, at 8:30 p.m. Nov.
6 and at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 7 in Or-
chestra Hall. For information,
call the DSO, 833-3700.
