AFTER FOUR, months of
recuperating from "accidental
tourist" status, former Detroiter
Sylvia Frommer Mracky is back
Bangkok provided
the secret to Thai
cooking.
in her professional traveler
mode ... Now a California trav-
el agent, she recently complet-
ed a six-day tour of Ireland with
friend Marion Conway, former
Miss America, plus a cane for
support . . . Sylvia happily left
behind the wheel chair and
crutches used since she became
a "Vietnam casualty" in June.
Sylvia has traveled safely in
84 countries, but found that
didn't guarantee her well-being
in the 85th . . . After 15 days of
adventure cruising with cousin
and longtime travel buddy, lo-
calite journalist Shirlee Iden, to
Brunei, Sarawak, the South
China Sea, Malaysia and Thai-
land, the gals arrived at Ho Chi
Minh City (Saigon) on the ship
MS Explorer.
They looked forward to Viet-
nam's capital as the frosting on
their expedition cake, but 90
minutes in the teaming city of
6.5 million and the whole cake
crumbled . . . Sylvia was run
over by a motor bike, thrown to
the ground, and suffered a bro-
ken left femur . . . her first
mishap in 17 years as a travel
agent . . . After a grueling trip
by rickshaw back to the ship,
the Explorer's doctor, Dana Daf-
nis, diagnosed a broken hip,
later confirmed by X-ray .. .
Seven hours later, following two
ambulance rides and two hos-
pital stops, Sylvia's leg was en-
cased in plaster and she rested
in a hospital bed.
"You've broken something
they can fix. It will be all right,"
was Shirlee's repeated counsel
. . . Never more than two feet
from her injured cousin, she left
once to call Ron Mracky,
Sylvia's husband . . . Two hours
later, he wired $19,000 to an in-
ternational insurance company
for a private jet and a medical
team to escort the women to
Singapore.
The next day, their 1993
evacuation was carried out in
a sleek, red-and-silver Lear Jet
35, not via what would have
been a very cramped helicopter
from the embassy roof . . . The
trip from Tan Son Nhut Airport
to Singapore took an hour and
45 minutes . . . 48 hours later,
Dr. Krisna Muti operated on
Sylvia at Singapore General
Hospital, inserting a screw and
a plate in her fractured hip .. .
He personally oversaw Sylvia's
care during her weeks in the
hospital until Ron came to es-
cort his wife back to California.
Sylvia joked about setting off
alarms in the next airport se-
curity system she would walk
through, but her screw and
plate didn't give a peep going to
Ireland.
BACK IN 1926, it was start-
ed as a means to assist area
refugees by giving them a
chance to sell their native arts
and crafts . . . The 67th annu-
al Old World Market, at South-
field Civic Center Pavilion, Civic
Center Drive and Evergreen
. . . Oct. 15, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Oct.
16, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Oct. 17, 10
a.m.-6 p.m. . . . is today much
more than just that.
It now draws thousands and
is a metro-area celebration of
ethnic entertainment, arts,
crafts and foods . . . 25 music
and dance groups are featured
in continuous performances,
plus 40 world-class shopping
booths with imports and items
from around the world; chil-
dren's booths, craft demonstra-
tions and a nationality apparel
show of more than three dozen
authentic costumes.
Proceeds benefit the Inter-
national Institute of Metropol-
itan Detroit's ethnic enrichment
fund for new immigrants to the
area.
